    @dave-b

How did this door get hinged in the rear?  Was there actually a series made with the suicide doors, or is this custom work?

I believe that early Lafers had suicide doors.

    MINE HAD ‘SUICIDE’ DOORS TOO

    I THOUGHT THEY ALL DID

I AM PRETTY SURE THAT ORIGINAL METAL MGTD’S ALL HAD SUICIDE DOORS.

Randy in Chandler Arizona, great B-bopp'in teritory. I must have the only one in the country made by Rich Industries in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, on a 1986 Ford Cortina (english ford escort) It's a 1600cc straight four cylinder front engne, 4 speed, changed from right side driver to left side with several shafts and u-joints. BEBOP because I once had an MGB with license plate MG-BEPOP in Virginia.

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A “suicide door” is the slang term for a door hinged at its rear rather than the front.[1][2][3] Such doors were originally used on horse-drawn carriages,[4] but are rarely found on modern vehicles due primarily to safety concerns.

Popularized in the custom car trade,[5] the term is avoided by major automobile manufacturers in favor of alternatives such as “coach doors” (Rolls-Royce),[3] “FlexDoors” (Opel),[6] “freestyle doors” (Mazda),[3] “rear access doors” (Saturn),[3] and “rear-hinged doors”.[1]

Perhaps we could adopt one of these less intimidating alternatives.

Bebop…correct. Original TC, TD and TF had rear hinged doors.

    As do most replicas.

MP Lafer is an exception. They engineered solid side windows that would open and close with the doors. And it kind of required a front hinged door.

My vote is no. I do not believe that is an MP Lafer.

    Windshield frame gives it away.

And because of the way the side windows are engineered, MP Lafers usually do not have wind wings.

The guy that took the shot says it’s a Daytona but I didn’t know that Daytonas had regular doors.

To my knowledge, only Lafer did not have “suicide” doors.

It looks to me like the builder or some prior owner re-hinged them to open from the rear.

    Noticed two other differences.

The “louvers” on an MP Lafer are raised above the surface of the side panel, convex if you will. On every other TDr that I have seen, the “louvers” are concave.

And the one that should have been obvious to us from the start, the red TDr in the picture Vicenç posted has snaps for side curtains. Unless the owner had a tonneau cover, an MP Lafer would not have those snaps.

Here’s another view of the car Vicenç posted.

An MP Lafer has a grill medallion that says “MP”

This one looks like a MiGi medallion.

Good catch, Paul.  I had seen that pic before but I didn’t make the connection.
