Looking to replace my VDO speedometer as the odometer part don’t work. Mine currently reads to 85mph and has the black face. If another you know of will fit my VW chassis, that would be fine or a white face speedometer and tach and I’ll replace both

    Thanks,

    Spike

Is yours 3 3/8 inches or 3 1/8 inch diameter?

Hi, measuring across gauge looks like 3 1/4 outside chrome ring to outside chrome ring. Seems glass measures 3 inches across. So I’m guessing it’s the 3 1/8 gauge

Thanks but that one on ebay is a electronic one. Mine is old school. I have the speedometer cable type. (69 vw )

Your tach isn’t mechanical, only the speedometer. No VW that I’m aware of came with a mechanical, cable-driven tach off the distributor…

Be careful when ordering. The dash on mine is drilled for the 3-3/8″ speedo and tach. Believe it or not noone makes a bushing or bezel to fit the smaller 3-1/8″ gauge into that larger hole.

I’m really only looking for the mechanical speedometer, the one that uses the cable from the front wheel. I would replace both the speedo and tach if they were white face gauges. I have the black face set now.
    Thanks,

    Dear Spike

I also have the Classic Roadster’s LTD VW based kit.  I’m replacing my guages as well.  On both of my kits, only the speedometer is on a cable going to the driver’s front wheel.  the tach is wired to the rear harness.  I’ll be replacing my  guages with the classic cockpit  guages from my local VW parts dealer.

Try calling MG Magic. They have TD gauges with the black face. They can tell you the size (and the price)of the speedometers they offer.

I took mine apart and repaired it . It was a gear slipping on a shaft. A bit of crazy glue and its been good now for 3 years. Bit of a challenge getting the thing apart though!

AutoMeter.com has a speedo that works on GPS…no cables or a chassis with no speed sensor.
I’ve used it on a couple of custom movie cars that I didn’t want to bother hooking up or creating a speedo system.

    http://www.autometer.com/universal-gps-speedometer-interface-module.html

Will work with most all their speedos. even the antique looking ones.

    Starts you thinking …right?

I put a GPS speedometer in my new dash.  Got it from Speedhut.  Just needs to be wired in and the antenna has a magnet that attaches nicely to the steering column.  Fiberglass does not hinder the signal.  Since I’ve only driven the car a couple of miles from one shop to another, about all I can say so far is that the speedometer seems to work well.  It has some kind of circuit or system that lets it measure speed from a startup even before it catches the GPS signal.  I liked the Speedhut gauges better than the Autometer ones because you can actually design them to suit your own style, and they are made in U.S.

I used a white backing with “GT” numerals and Antique ticking, chrome smoothie bezel, domed glass, and “chrome blade racer red” pointer.  Unfortunately the pointer won’t come in black but otherwise this is a pretty similar looking speedo to a real TD.

John, please post a photo of your speedometer?

This does look like a nice setup.
Playing with the graphics, if I were doing one now I’d go with the Century font, standard ticking, and  Day – Silver dial // black font Night – Dial Blue Glow
Either way, beats the heck out of my old VW speedo with a white sticker on it, looks-wise.
But I still got that fuel gauge right in the middle of it…

Just as an aside here, I have often made adapters and space fillers for dashboards using thin but rigid material such as Formica.  I usually cut the inside hole on the drill press using a fly cutter, which can be adjusted to exactly the size you need, then rough cut the outside shape and finish on the belt sander.  You can get Formica scraps in many colors and patterns at cabinet shops.  It might also be possible to cover the adapter with chrome tape but I have not yet tried that.

This is my first attempt to load a photo.  It apparently will allow me to post the photo but for some reason it is turning it upside down.  I even tried turning the original upside down and reposting so if the forum software is making the original upside down it would correct itself — but no luck, it really wants this photo to be upside down.  This photo does not show the speedometer clearly because it was just a preliminary photo of my new dashboard with the new instruments installed and prior to wiring them in (betcha couldn’t tell, huh?).  I can’t get a better photo of my speedometer or anything else because my car is currently at the body shop for paintwork.

The larger gauges just look so much more appropriate for the curved lines of the dashboard. Well done!

Ed, Here’s a pix of the speedo/dash. To be clear I’m not running the GPS speedo. The Trans has a pulse out put for a digital gauge.

I like the ‘old tyme’ look of the quad gauge.

CW, I like those gauges so much I almost wish that my dash wasn’t complete and working.  Very nice.  Definite “old tyme” look.
