Hi Guys
well i relocated the fuel filter and its lines. This seems to have stopped the fuel boiling syndrome. The current status is this. It starts and runs great but hot when you turn the engine off and go for a restart the only way it will restart is to floor the throttle and keep cranking, it will then fire up and limp onto all four cylinders as if it were flooded. Upon looking in the carb throat when I switch it off you can see petrol dripping into the manifold from the carb. The carb is new as is the fuel pump,, distributer starter and battery all provided by the previous owner. So where do I go now guys? Any ideas?

May 16, 2015 at 6:37 am #264504You might want to check the float in the carb bowl. Your float valve may be set too high or stuck open…or the float isn’t floating. New carb? New doesn’t mean good.
Mine doesn’t like you to touch the accelerator unless it’s running.
Electric fuel pump? Measure the pressure at the carb.May 16, 2015 at 9:21 am #264505AnonymousInactiveJohn: Fuel dripping into manifold after shut down is indication of idle cut off solenoid not working. A quick check is to turn on ignition engine Not running and pull black wire going to solenoid. There should be a click heard. If not check for voltage of 12 volts at connector. If there is 12 volts at connector and no click is heard solenoid is bad.
You might check Samba VW site for info as well as VW parts suppliers as they have some technical info for troubleshooting problems.
Keep working on it it will work out and be fun in the sun.

Thanks for the input, I am on it today. I will post any results. The biggest chore is of course starting the car from warm as the only way you can do that is to floor the gas pedal and crank it for a while until it fires. Then it will limp onto 4 cylinders. After that its fine until you shut it off again.

Well I carried out such check and you all advised and come to the conclusion that the idle fuel solenoid is the culprit. Add that to the list of things to do etc. Thanks to you all.
I am still thinking about moving the passenger footwell back (meaning towards the front of the car) a few inches. Has anyone done this and has a idea just how far you can move it, and what the issues are in doing so?
My other future project it the relocation in some way of the parking brake. I saw some detail of another members efforts that looked great. I just wonder if there is alternative ideas?

It is good for some storage but is a pain to get things in and out of it. It is about 20 or so inches deep. Located about 4 inches above the floor. If your gas tank is crosswise of the car and battery in front of the gas tank see no problem to move it at least as far as drivers side. My battery is in the very front of my car over the front axle. There is a extra 10 gallon tank in front of the VW tank. Now to fix my seats for long range runs.
