    Howdy Friends!

Was driving around happy with my car today when all of a sudden it started knocking! BAD!!  shut it off and then restarted it, wasn’t so bad but still there, seemed to be running on all four just had a knock ( gradually getting less)   I decided to carefully head home 16 miles, engine runs OK but bogs a little on acceleration.  Got home OK knock seems to be gone will do a valve adjustment in the morning.
I was puzzling what it could be , sounded like something had gone down the carb so I removed the air cleaner and looked inside………   MY ACCELERATOR TUBE IS GONE!!!!!    That is what made the knocking sound and why it bogs a little!!   Anyone else have this happen?   If it had happened on the road I probably wouldn’t have heard it at all but it happened just as I was pulling away from a curb.  I likely should take it apart to see what damage is done but I think I’ll just run it for a while and see, it sounds good now.  What would you do?  I will get another tube and put it in there!

Gone? It wasn’t down the carb somewhere? How could it be gone?

The engine ate it!!  ( that’s what the knocking sound was)  I’m assuming any potential damage it could do is already done so I’m going to continue running it unless something turns up.

At least it is brass, probably less damage than if something steel was ingested.

Ya, I doubt there is any serious damage!

What ever it was probably melted and came out exhaust . If it is a VW with oil screen check the screen . When I first got my car I changed the oil screen ,lots of stuff in the screen . Ran a magnet through it . Some of it stuck . That was 10,000 miles ago , car runs strong . Screen is always clean now when I change the oil .

WOW! That is interesting, mine was seated pretty dang good and I would have to use pliers to pull it out whenever I cleaned the carb. How loose was yours?

    Ed,

If you’re lucky, this tube got lodged in the intake manifold or the head trying to make its way into the cylinder during the brief time that the intake valve was open.

A bit less lucky, it did get hammered between the intake valve and its seat (the knocking you heard) and a compression test should reveal.

Less lucky still, it made its way into the cylinder and you lost a piston (I think you’d know).

Yeah, I have a hard time believing it made it all the way into a cylinder.

And if it had, I don’t think it would have melted.

Depending on composition, the melting point of brass is around 900 – 940 °C, 1652 to 1724 °F.

A little googling says an internal combustion engine hits around 700 °C (about 1300 °F) inside the cylinder.

Samba site has numerous cases of accelerator tube dropping, some lodging in intake manifold and some on valves and some completely gone. So I guess it is possible to have it go missing. Usually all that was required was a new accelerator tube, staked in place and good to go. Some of the people reported a previous flat spot on acceleration now gone.

As I wrote in a previous post, if this had happened on the highway I doubt I’d have even noticed it except for the bog it now has on acceleration.  I’m sure it is busted up and puked out the exhaust now. Engine is sounding fine.

Well that’s good to hear, would have been no fun to do a rebuild all for a little brass tube eh?

You can probably pick up a new one from the Samba classifieds, shouldn’t be too hard to find I wouldn’t think.

I may have to polish it to fit!
