Allen,
I use mine all the time, on the MG TDr and on my ’65 Plymouth. When removing snaps, I slide it under the cover fabric, between the fabric and the female portion of the snap. I’ve never scratched paint, gelcoat or stainless moldings. Just be careful.
If I am reading Bill’s post correctly, sounds like he slips the tool between the button and the top of the fabric. that will obviously keep the tool head away from your finish. I’ve never tried that. But it seems to me the button head is too tight to the fabric for that to work for me. Different strokes I guess… 🙂
Just from looking at pictures, I think the tool would work to remove lift-a-dot fasteners also. But you’d be sliding the tool between the male stud, and teh bottom of teh lift-a-dot. that;s even closer to your paint/gelcoat than with standard normal snaps.
If you are really concerned, you might consider Tomax fasteners.
