Seriously. My thought was to use a thin-walled replacement (I assume they’re thinner-walled) and hammer it: set it in a vice (probably in a piece of wood drilled so the cap lip is supported all around), open end up and get a dowel that’s just a bit smaller than the I.D., then whack the crap out of it.Thinking the cap will elongate a bit and get a…[Read more]

Most of my tool collection is left handed. Very little seems to work right.

You must have been using a right handed hammer…ya need that left handed one!

I tried the hammer. then another hammer and then a different hammer. All I managed to do was make the original cap smaller. Don’t forget that there is important stuff (the wheel bearing nut) that is inside the cup. No way could I get it small enough to fit inside the adapter yet large enough to fit around the axle spindle nut. Maybe ther…[Read more]

Roy I’m like ed…Hammer, hammer, hammer. Old air force maintenance saying…hammer it to fit and paint it to match! Dats me! Nice job.

There’s an email letter going around from SEMA that adrdesses that and the new house bill to kill raising ethanol to 15%. The Ethanol is bad for the new engines especially the seals. newkitman2012-08-22 18:28:04

Nice work Roy. I had a chuckle when you listed tools used. It was almost a complete machine shop. I always say there is nothing a good man can’t fix with enough tools.

No Ed, your idea of starting with cheap Chinese caps is a fine one. I had an extra original and that (plus a piece of conduit and some flat steel, metal lathe, dremel and a grinder, drill press, mig welder, and some jeweler’s files) is what I used. It was the diameter of the cup, not the flange that was too large. I’d be embarrassed to tell yo…[Read more]

Wow. What did you start with, Roy? My idea of buying an EMPI Chinese replacement cap and modding it was no good?

Good thinking Allan. I always get less mileage from blended fuel too. I wish I’d a thought of that when I put a new elec. fuel pump on my’63 Willys 4wd truck. The first one lasted 20 years. One of those old AC pumpers that pumps a bit and shuts off when the pressure gets up when the bowl is full. You know what they look like. After much s…[Read more]

When I first bought my TD 3 years ago I was getting an average of 30-32 mpg. I had the valves adjusted 3 months later and then I was averaging 28 mpg. I just had major work done on my engine last month including a carb rebuild. Now I’m averaging 24 – 27 mpg. Go figger.

This is hopefully the last wire wheel post. (Though I still am contemplating mounting the spare aft a’la TD. – need to find one poor condition adapter then do some engineering and welding to make a bracket.) You may know that the speedometer has not worked since I put the wires on. The problem there was that the front axle grease cup was too la… -

My son finished the gas tank! We’ve already had an issue with the fuel supply tube breaking but we have a solution that will keep him from having to open it back up. Frustrating but fixable.I’m not quite ready to anchor it in place but I did a test fit and it’s perfect. Here are the pics. What a talented kid.
