What would it take to get the horn working again? The bulb should be an easy replacment. any paint chips or fiberglass or gelcoat cracking?

No Allen. We went only as far as So. Deerfield, to the Yankee Candle Workshop. Very nice scenic ride going by the backroads. Did Berkshires last year to No. Adams on the Mohauk Trail, another nice ride. Hoping to continue riding into November like last year.

One wheel eh? It sounds as if one circuit on your dual circuit master cylinder has failed. That happened on my Avanti. Scary.

And by the way, once you are done…the VW shifter will still feel loose and sloppy comapred to your Honda S2000!

I lied…one other comment…
On an untouched Beetle, the bracket inside the tunnel is spot welded to the tunnel. The two bolts on the bracket on top of the tunnel, which holds your shift lever in, bolt through the bracket inside the tunnel.
The shift lever has been relocated from it’s stock location. In doing so it is VERY possible the builder…[Read more] -

Not a great picture, but this shows the bracket inside the center tunnel and the bushing that likely needs to be replaced:

Allen and Tom are right on target. The most likely cause for a really loose gear shift lever is the bushing on the shift rod has fallen apart. This bushing is about an inch and a half to the rear of the shift mount hole in the center tunnel.
Check this thread for instruction on replacing the shift rod…[Read more] -

If the bushing and coupler are both ok you can purchase a short shift kit (again not expensive) that will greatly inhance your shifting expirience. You can also purchase an aftermarket shifter from a variety of manufacturers. Empi and Bugpack are a couple manufacturers that come to mind. They are more expensive than the short shift kit but are an…[Read more]

Montie I’m interested in your T shifter handle replacement project. Some of those after market replacements can be expensive but would be a very nice change to our Ford based cars.

Keep in mind that if you’re using a brake master cylinder off a car that had previously had power brakes the master cylinder may not be appropiate. Master cylinders come in various bore sizes for different applications. Factors like weight of car, brake lever mechanical advantage and whether power brakes are incorporated are all factors.
Of c…[Read more] -

A lot depends on whats causing the sloppiness. There is a shift rod bushing that fits into the bracket inside the tunnel that the shift rod fits through. If that’s worn or broken you can remove the shift lever, and disconnect the shift rod and replace the bushing. On the transaxle end of the shift rod, underneath the shift linkage cover at the…[Read more]

Update: The block was found to be cracked and dirty. The performance shop would not even repair it, saying it was no more than a paperweight now.I found a new block and will get that put together with a new cam and lifters, ultimately, a whole new engine.

It’s not getting rotors turned, I’m getting new ones. In fact, I’m getting the whole system replaced. Rebuilt parts when new replacements are not available. The front end is from an ’84 Chevette and the rear end is from a, ’86-’88 Nissan 240 ZX or maybe a 260Z. What a strange combination. She was only stopping on one wheel, so the new brake job…[Read more]

Have been taking advantage of the fine weather we’ve had this past week in New England, taking in the fall foliage. Yesterday, as I was heading to the western part of the state of Mass, my odometer turned over to 50,000. Thank God, this TD rides and purrs like a kitten. I’ve had very few minor problems. My wife and I are enjoying this very much.…[Read more]
