newkitman replied to the topic VW chassis # and engine # in the forum VW Based Kits 14 years, 8 months ago
Hey Junkman. You are really close. The chassis is a Sept 1968 Chassis which started the 69 year model. And the engine is a 1600cc engine built between Aug. to Dec. 69. My guess is the engine is probably not original to the car but that’s not uncommon. Folks swapped engines easily back then and a lot still do.

Hi Larry, Victoria, VA is south central VA. I’m about 20 miles west of South Hill. About 40 minutes from N.C.

Will Burge replied to the topic vintage speedometer in the forum General Discussion 14 years, 8 months ago
It is a brand name they were made by a company who makes boat gauges for CMC I looked them up once, the name escapes me at the moment. They may still be available at MG magic. I spoke with Brad about them and he is the one who told me the story about the boat manufacturer.

I think the brand is vintage as I believe that is what I have. If the speedo is broken perhaps you want to take it out and send it to a speedo repair facility. These may be difficult to locate now as they are pretty old.

Hi and welcome to the forum. About the speedometer, is ”vintage ” a brand name or is it just referring to a type that is suitable for the car?Is it mechanical with a cable connecting it to the transmission or electrical connected to the sender on the trans by wires only?
See the link page to the left in the aqua block at the bottom for MG…[Read more] -

Get the adjustable beam. The lowering spindles might be enough to get the ride height correct with the stock, unmodified beam. BUTThe torsion springs inside that beam were built to handle a front end weighing 800-1000 lbs.Our cars, being fiberglass, and having had the “front seat” moved effectively to the “back seat,” have more like 500-600lbs over…[Read more]

Allen, In my opinion, and it’s just an opinion, untill you get the kit body on the pan,it will be difficult to determine just how much you need to lower the front end . The general feeling of those on the forum is to remove some torsion bar leaves from both upper and lower beams and to replace the stock beam with an adjustable one. This will be…[Read more]

Larry I believe that you re correct. I’m not all that familiar with dropped spindles but it seems that it lowers the front end without altering the front to rear distance of the wheel. Do most VW kits not do anything with the front beam? If so, then I’ll leave it as is.

Dan , That’s real nice of you to offer to check out the car. There’s nothing quite like seeing something in person. The fact that you have a car of the same type would mean that you would have something to compare it to. Hope you have a safe and pleasant trip.

Allen, I’m sure that by now you have read at least some of the many posts on the forum about lowering and softening the front suspension on these cars.Much of the info has been presented by those that I respect greatly and who have been there and done that some more than once. Some say add weight and remove leaves others say only to remove l…[Read more]

Hi Allen,Actually the stock ride VW ride height is correct for most MG kits. However, if you soften the front suspension by removing torsion bars from the front beam, you need an adjustable front beam to RAISE the ride height back to normal after you soften it. So my answer to the lowered spindles is… “no”

Blu2u. Again may I say welcome to the forum. I to recommend the Samba site for VW info.
Off the top of my head ,the only overseas kit producer was MPLafer. Look in the photo gallery under BrasilUSA and see if your car looks like the one in the picture. Notice that the doors are hinged at the front instead of at the rear as all other MG re…[Read more] -

Blu2U,Welcome to the forum. By the engine number you listed (it was taken from the base of the generator stand hopefully) it is a 1968/1969, 1500CC Single port engine. Here’s a good web site to help out with the VW data:http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/engine_letters.phpAnd whilew you’re at it, please enter you car in the registry.
