Thanks Paul — looking forward to meeting up with you and the crowd at Va Beach!!
Good Info!! One of the links (Rob and Dave) suggested increasing the stroke on the acc pump to max — that is going to be the next thing I do after the afternoon rainstorm passes …..
…As I said before, What Fun!! If I keep this up I’ll soon know even m…[Read more]

It may be my tablet, or a caching issue, but I replied to Jack’s topic about Emma’s new carb – my reply, after 45 minutes still shows up in the Activity stream but does not show up in the forum topic. Similar thing yesterday led me to post a second (duplicate) reply yesterday. Not sure if that’s on my end, or on the server…

Swapping out the 009 temporarily, at least, is a good first step. If she’s idling fine, and running OK at full throttle, I’d focus first on the emulsion tubes and accelerator pump adjustments. It’s those transition circuits in between that are your acceleration issues. I certainly no Weber expert, but I think I understand their operating…[Read more]

My Duchess is st up the same way John. Big hole under the spare tire.
The guy that did the final build on my 1776 is a VW Micro Bus fan and has decades of experience with VWs. He said I have nothing to worry about. So I don’t. 😉

Sounds to me like the infamous “009 flat spot”
Read the article on Rob and Dave’s air cooled page.
And here is a thread on the Samba.

Hey Kentt —
There is a slotted extension on the manifold that fits over the center stud on the engine case — We had to file that slot to get the manifold to fit in the space — but it does fit and it is good and solid. I went to the local VW boneyard and got a set of preheat pipes which fit the manifold and just had to be bent to fit the…[Read more]

Looking really good Jack! I’m jealous of how accessible those adjustment screws are! Looks like you’ve succeeded in putting heat risers on it (though they’re locked down yet). I can’t tell if you’ve added a brace for the center section with the carb or it or not. I think you’ll likely need one. I don’t see much room for velocity stacks though.…[Read more]

Paul, the guy who is my “new” mechanic prepares and races sand rails, and he says that my car is just about like a sand rail in that the engine is just sitting there, wide open underneath. I suspect my engine is like yours. The only tin I have is on the fan, the cylinders, and the rear tin. Air can freely move from the front to the back and fr…[Read more]

Oh yeah, one other thing…
I don’t have a temp gauge installed. But I have shot at the head and oil pan with an infrared temp gauge and have been with teh norms.
Ok, two other things…
Perhaps this is stating the obvious, but oil temperature and head temperature are two different things. If you have a temperature gauge on your dash, make sure…[Read more]

I’m not advocating this, as I know it flies in the face of all accepted VW cooling principals.
I have a 1776 in my TDr. The cylinder tin (upper and lower), and the rear tin (the sort of separates the top end from the muffler) are installed. No other tin is installed. And the engine compartment is not sealed. I’ve not seen any problems in traffic…[Read more]

New information. I was trying to understand how the VW cooling system worked when I discovered the probable cause of my heating issues. I could feel strong puffs of very hot air coming out by the #2 cylinder, with no apparent duct there. The exhaust was tight, so I traced this to the heat riser, which was unprofessionally installed by so…[Read more]

For those of you who may be considering attending this show, this has been the usual order of events:
We all try to arrive at the Oceanfront Inn (2901 Virginia Beach, Va. 757-422-0445) on Friday afternoon and meet for dinner at Murphy’s (within a walk).
Sat morning we usually have breakfast at the Inn’s restaurant. We generally plan our meet i…[Read more]

Now the bad news… I’m driving the Intermeccanica, not my Duchess.

CAN ANYONE ADVISE ME AS TO HOW TO POST A PICTURE?????
I tried every trick I know — in the mean time, anyone interested in seeing the progress on Emma”s new Weber Carb can check out the latest picture in my media tab under Happy Jack….
Happy Jack
(not very happy with his lack of “Picture Posting Prowess….!!)
