Ed et all with a VW based TDr with the battery in the box in front of the gas tank. I did a string mock up of the battery cable run and the battery cable on mine is 139 inches. That gives me about 1-1/2 inches of free plat near the starter solenoid.

While we are on the subject of tops, is it recommended to put the top up when short term storing, i.e a few days to a couple of weeks, or, as my top is as old as the car; 10+ yrs, is it ok to leave it down?
I’ve had three convertibles in my lifetime and been told ALWAYS put the top up when its not being driven to keep the top from shrinking, but,…[Read more]

I have a Tonneau Cover and rather than use the snaps from the kit, I think I’ll use Lift-the-dots. And use Lift-the-Dots on the convertible top on the rear, sides and door panels and use the snaps on the windshield frame. I also highly recommend a good cleaner for the Tonneau and the Top.

Depends on how you route it, I’d think. Why not mock it up with a length of clothesline or anchor rope first?

As this thread is jumping around, I’d like to add that when Patti and myself travelled through Pittsburgh for the MINI takes the States event during the Vintage Grand Prix week we enjoyed a good dinner and car show with Bill and Audrey. Thanks, Bill.

Roy. No offense taken. The individual who coached me to consider it a large diode obviously was wrong. Thanks for the education.

I should clarify…
The Classic Roadsters Ltd. Duchess top does not fit inside the body. It rests on top of the body when folded. But it only overhangs an inch or two, so it would be easy to have a tonneau cover made to fit over it.
The bow hinges mount to the top of the bodywork also. So there is no way the top would drop within the body. The…[Read more]

@royal – You are right, we talked about this at VA Beach last year. I don’t doubt that you are right about the relative ease of “fixing” the overhang, my doubt is in my ability to “fix” anything. Things usually end up more “fixed” when I try to fix them.

Vicenc, didn’t we talk about this once when we first met at Carlisle? I believe that your top bows are not mounted where most/many are. This can be somewhat compensated for by adjusting the length of the bows. You might do well to examine closely some of the other Fiberfab member’s bow installations. (The tubing that typically is used for the…[Read more]

Allen, I apologize but your post about testing the condenser is simply wrong.
A condenser can not and should not be thought of as a diode. A condenser will “charge” up when a voltage is applied across it, as current is stored in the condenser. To test a condenser (automotive) you can apply voltage either way and it is most easily done with a s…[Read more]

I will be keeping the battery in front of the gas tank as designed and I will purchase the battery cable from Franklin Battery (a local automotive electrical shop). I think a 72 inch cable will be enough but my rough measurements say 116 inches. Does my measurement sound to long?

@pmossberg @kall – As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. The builder fitted the top frame so that it would overhang the rear of the car and no matter how the top is folded it will not fit inside the body shell because the bows extend beyond the shell.
