Progress on the Toyota, for any interested. I think this will be a much better fix than the typical DIY guy might make (with fiberglass mesh and Bondo). It’s all metal, held together with two full packages of JB Weld at 3960 PSI along a good bit of surface area.
I actually had fun shaping the remnants of my wrecked Nissan’s front fender to… -

That’s a good spot to look. They are apparently very common in Brazil. None on the Samba when I looked the other day but probably they come up from time to time. They should not cost a lot.

Cool beans. Thanks Ed and Kent. Maybe I’ll get lucky and score a set at the Bug-A-Paluza show in Chattanooga this April. I always make Reynolds GA, Chattanooga TN, Montgomery AL, and Dade City, FL VW shows each year. And I plan own adding Carlisle PA and the VA show Roy et al go to, next year for sure.

Tom Vilardi replied to the topic BCW construction in the forum Chevy/Ford Kits 9 years, 5 months ago
Ric, In digging through the various discussions here and elsewhere it appears that the raw materials used to build the BCW’s were indeed new and purchased directly from GM or perhaps even through a GM sub-contractor.
I may have already mentioned this, but my BCW is actually titled as an “ASC” which may stand for “American Sunroof Co… -

Brazilian VW rims, late model (circa 1991–see here). Cip1 had these–non chrome–on “clearance” for like 4 years for $49 per and I almost bought them a dozen times, but never did. Haven not seen them listed in quite a while, so maybe discontinued.
I think they look very cool & would go great on a TDr.edsnova2016-03-20 21:12:09

Thanks Kent for the Bosch part number. Kind of pricy new (but I know, I know, SAFETY….) however, I found them listed for sale on The Samba ads for $30 plus shipping. Before I pull the trigger and order 2 [one for Emma (BCW Tdr) and one for Merlin (bugeye)] I’m going to check with my local VW recycler/scrap yard/mechanic to see what he has in h…[Read more]

I dont remember it. I was born in 68 but it looks like another great product the government took away from us for our own protection like quality paints and effective bug killers.

I remember it well. I thought it was in the 50’s or 60’s.
Used it many times and I think it was Gumout. I tried hard to find it (or it’s successor) a few years ago. Failed. As I remember, a ton of black smoke when you used it. For some reason, I think it was banned or discontinued or both.

Be Careful?…Nah. When I’m careful I ALWAYS get hurt.
But I’ll file this in lessons learned and press on.

Allen, you seem to have my problem in reverse. I have a 69 vehicle, 69 engine with a 71 transaxle. …see I told you to be careful.

newkitman replied to the topic Transaxle Throwout Bearing in the forum VW Based Kits 9 years, 5 months ago
Well I finally figured it out. (Note to self (and anyone else.)) My chassis is a 71 chassis so I ordered parts for the transaxle figuring it was a 71. NOT!! It’s a 69 IRS with the older configuration. This means I have to get a throw out bearing shaft, a throw out bearing, pressure plate and a clutch operating shaft repair kit al for a 69…[Read more]
