A slight digression…but this answers a question that has come up here several times, never with a crystal clear answer.
From the aircoole.net listing for the t-fitting:“The stock VW sender is set to trigger at 2.5-3.0 psi. Low pressure like this is NORMAL for the VW at hot idle.”If I can find the thread on VW oil pressure, I’ll move th… -

Ditto what Allen wrote.
A worn (or missing) shift rod bushing is my first guess! -

Mike. As I understand the system, the gen/alt light comes from the voltage regulator. With a generator you must have the bulb working (not burned out) as it completes the charging circuit. Not the case with an alternator. Can you connect the wire from the voltage regulator directly to the amp gauge in place of the warning light? That I’m not sure…[Read more]

Mike,
They sell a “T fitting” that allows you to use a sending unit for the idiiot light and a pressure gauge from the one opening in the engine block. -

with one post and a blue w/green stripe wire coming from it. I hooked that to the oil pressure idiot light and it works fine, on when key turned and off when rpm’s come up. Would it make sense to replace that with a two-pole sensor and run that to both the idiot light and the gauge? As for the amp gauge, do I really need to have it working if…[Read more]

Sounds like the bushing in the shift rod bracket is either worn or missing. When you pull the shifter and see the shift rod, just slightly rearward of the end of the shift rod is the bracket with the bushing. Its a neoperene bushing that fits around the shift rod and keeps it in position. Not difficult to change out the shifter bushing. Just a…[Read more]

First, Welcome to the site.Let’s hope that you only have a shifter problem since the alternative is a transaxle problem which is much more difficult to repair. See Rob & Dave’s site to get you started on troubleshooting: -

Mike, I’ll try.
Just because you have an oil pressure warning light does not mean that you have a signal for an oil pressure gauge. The gauge usually requires a separate sender mounted on the engine although there are senders that send two signals, one to the light and the other to the gauge. The sender is usually located just forward of the di… -

Ed, I fully agree with you. But, have you ever driven a TC? Despite what the Red Car book that we all read leads us to believe, I beg to differ with it’s analysis of a TC as an excellent racing machine. They are very high center of gravity and the normal 19″ skinny tires and poor braking do not give a feeling of security at speed. I most def…[Read more]

I’ve seen that car for sale a couple times before. Really stunning–maybe the best one there is. Lot of minor mods that take away from originality but increase function. The 5 speed. The combo oil pressure/temp gauge (first came in ’52).
I wouldn’t throw it out of my garage, but $80k is, indeed, a lot of butter. That steering wheel is pretty… -

Thanks Paul.
The rubber is a good idea, but then it seems like there would be a gap between the fender and the bottom of the grille/front splash piece.I was originally thinking of cutting out around the steering column and box then making a mould of the box in fiberglass, this way the fiberglass grille piece sits flat on top of the fender.Thoughts on this? -

Reading through this I feel kinda lucky to have a nice set of seat springs (bucket bottoms with bench back) that I can get upholstered and put in my MG eventually. 😀
