    Bill, 

    I would not run an engine without an air cleaner.  The one shown in photo #2 is a shorty Kadron that just barely fits inside the “spare tire” Continental cover.  (I am trying to get another 1/4″ somewhere – it’s tighter than I am comfortable with.)
