Well I took the car for a ride today and cannot beleve how much cooler it ran. Now I changed temp. sender and gauge, but they both read 210f in a pan of boiling water on the same day. The new one is on the drain plug, while the other was on the dip stick. I am thinking they should read the same. The other change is to a new muffler. The old one had extractors and a glass pack, and I changed it as it was too close to the back deck and had burned it. The new one drops down to a single muffler and single exhaust. I am wondering if all the extractor pipes up high in the engine compartment was adding and holding enough heat to account for the higher running temp. I also changed from Castrol 30w to Mobile ! syn 15w-50. Today is the hotest day so far this year, and I made the same trip I did last week, and today the oil temp. never got over 200F at 55 mph, while it was running 220F + at 50 mph last week. Hummmm, I wonder if the extractors add more than a small hp gain. Comments ? Rollie

The improvement is likely a combo of the oil change and the exhaust change.
But yes. I think the extractors could have created your heat problem. Hold you hand next to the new muffler after a long run and you’ll see how hot it gets. Moving that heat down and away from the engine wasa good thing!

August 10, 2009 at 11:20 pm #239402Thanks for the comments. Another clue: after the engine was up to temperature, it would stall at red lights. I noticed when I would get home, that the gas was bubbling in the clear plastic of the fuel filter. Hummmmm…..vapor lock ? I rerouted the fuel line when I changed the muffler and it never stalled once today. Possibly the engine compartment is cooler, and not so prone to overheating the fuel.
August 10, 2009 at 11:37 pm #239403Vapor lock usually occurs when the car has been run and turned off, The gas in the line overheats, vaporizes and you cannot restart the car.
It takes more heat to vaporize the gas when it’s flowing, so your engine compartment must have been really…really hot.
And about the “flowing gas is cooler” thing….when I was a teenager, my next door neighbor worked as a pipe fitter at the Exxon refinery in Linden NJ. He casually mentioned once about cutting into gas lines (like one foot diameter lines). Of course I assumed the gas flow was turned off. Nope. They cut while the gas was flowing because that flow helped carry the heat away. Not a job for me!

August 11, 2009 at 8:38 am #239404The stalling would happen after I sat at a long red light. It would run rougher and rougher until it quit. It was idling at about 900 rpm, and would keep running if I kept my foot on the gas and the idle 1200 – 1500. It would skip and sputter even at that. As soon as I took off and got moving, it would clear right up. I think you are right, it was very hot in there. Thanks.
As for cutting off running gas lines……….nope, I’ll take my chances with ” natural causes “. laugh
August 11, 2009 at 10:57 am #239405The synthetic oil GREATLY reduces oil temps, but the residual heat from the headers did not help. The fan inhaled hot air and passed it back over the oil cooler and engine. A clogged or restricted oil cooler will cause problems too.
I have a ’74 VW that I just changed from an uncoated “extractor” to a ceramic coated system. It runs much cooler now too.
I’ve been using synthetic oil since Amsoil came out decades ago. There is absolutely no comparing it to organic lubes. If I can’t get Royal Purple, I use Amsoil.
