Got all the problems with the front shocks taken care of and started working the repair of the rear of the TD body. PO didn’t use care when storing it and broke off one vertical piece in the rear that the engine cover closes against. I had to get the glassing done soon as the weather here will get below temps required to do fiberglass work. Came out pretty good I think. Still have to weld in the pans but I can weld when its cols outside. Tomorrow I have to take back the two rear inner bearings. They were supposed to fit  71 beetle but they were way to large of a diameter. Probably the wrong ones in the parts bin. I’ll bring them back tomorrow and bring my old ones for  comparison. The outer bearings are new and match the old ones. That’s about it for now. Here’s the before and after repair views if they come out.

    Photos didn’t post, Allen.

Should be numbers stamped into the bearing cone and the bearing race. Should make the exchange easy.

    Bill,

Definitely a wrong bearing. VW Part number should be 113.501.283 and on the box is part number 311.501.283X. On the edge of the bearing race it reads GERMANY 6306 C3. Looks like they are for a Type 3 and not Type 1. I’ll swap them out Monday at lunch.

Hey thanks for the confirmation Bill. Where are you getting these specs from? They’re really handy.

Well back to work on the chassis now that I have the correct rear inner bearings. Got the right rear assembled today after work. I stripped and painted the brake backing plates and have new everything else. Once assembled and without the brake shoes installed, when I spin the rear drum I’m getting a rub somewhere. I think the backing plate is rubbing the new drum somewhere. Gotta disassemble it and check tomorrow after the rain tonight moves through. Even though I’m getting a little rub I’m feeling pretty good about completing her on time. And it probably sounds silly but I’m still enjoying the build.  Smile  The saga continues tomorrow after work.

    Not silly at all Allen!

These little cars are fun to drive.

But I really enjoyed my build, way back in the early eighties. My dad, not so much, since I occupied his one car garage for nine months while his car sat outside!

Completing the car was great…but I still felt a bit melancholy that the work was done.

Well this is my last entry for Part 2. After this I’ll start Part 3. Today I finished the chassis mod. All that’s left before bolting the body on the pan is to install the pan seal. That should get in next weekend.
