Some of you may remember that I put a Holley 2bbl centermounted carb on my 1600cc sp VW. Running an isolated runner intake and an EMPI 4387 exhaust and I did some porting on the heads when I rebuilt it 2 years ago. New valves & springs. 009 dist @ 32 degrees. It really starts and runs great at all speeds.
BUT,
I have always gotten most pleasure out of making my machines run perfectly (as possible) rather than going the big displacement route.I have studied Bill Fisher’s How to Hotrod VW engines and still come up short of understanding why I do not have carburetor icing that all (or at least many) have. I understand about heat risers and mine are hooked up an apparently doing their job. Here in NC, I rarely drive her when temps are below 40. Am I to understand that I should get icing? Would the fact that I don’t ice up mean that something else (carb adjustment) is out of whack?? Plugs look good and an exhaust analyzer says my carbs are right on (in the driveway).
Separately,
I have been giving some thought to picking up some heat from the exhaust manifold and running it up to the Air cleaner for better fuel atomization.Ideas??
For me to convert to a dual port engine would be cost prohibitive.
I’m sure that some of you VW old-timers have some thoughts.

September 6, 2014 at 8:22 am #261334Thanks Ed – I needed that. My Honey-do list is done, and that’s where I get dangerous.

I’d leave her alone Roy!
When you feel like you have nothing to do (we should all be so lucky!)…DRIVE!
Maybe drive all the way north to Ed’s house…you can help with those head gaskets!
