Hi Guys.
Today I had to run all over the place in the TDr, which to me was a lot of fun. Temps were in the mid 90s so I was enjoying myself. Now in 3 weeks time I have to drive pretty much coast to coast (not in the TDr) So that started me thinking, could the trip be done in a TDr. Has it been done? Then the biggie. How fast could one do it in a TDr??? Hmmmm then came the why cant we do that??????? So what do you think guys? Would it be fun could it be done and what would be the target time. Two drivers non stop? Is it even possible?

June 3, 2015 at 11:18 pm #264741AnonymousInactiveJohn: I think the trip could be done by a TDr, Time 45 to 50 hours driving straight through. Eating on the run and one driver sleeping while other one drives. Mini cannon ball run would be fun. I mapped a route from Oakland Ca. to Carlisle Pa. Solo driver and driving 15 to 18 hours a day could be done in 3 to 4 days. Figured speeds of 45-70 miles per hour. Taking break in driving of 6-8 hours after driving 12 to 18 hours.
June 3, 2015 at 11:19 pm #264742Addendum, to the coast to coast adventure, Long beach CA to Virginia beach VA. 2750 miles.
What TDr would you take and what spares if any should you carry?
VW Chevy or Ford?
????????????
June 3, 2015 at 11:21 pm #264743Great thoughts George, A Mini Faux Cannonball. for the little guys. lol
June 3, 2015 at 11:47 pm #264744AnonymousInactiveJohn: VW powered. Carry spare fuel pump, Carb, dist tested and ready to run spare fuses and some wire. Hand tools needed to pull parts. And good towing insurance. Some snack food and drinks.
June 3, 2015 at 11:57 pm #264745George I looked up the cannonball times, its about 28 hours at the moment. I cant imagine driving like that for so long I think a great target time for our run would be around 45 hours or so, Anything less would be a bonus. What do you think? Maybe add another 10-20 gallons of gas too!
Interesting thoughts.

June 4, 2015 at 12:01 am #264746AnonymousInactiveJohn: My TDr Has two gas tanks. Stock VW and a custom 10 gallon tank. Both under the hood. Easy to go over 400 miles between fill ups.
June 4, 2015 at 12:10 am #264747George. Mine has the stock VW tank and a whole lot of space up front. Where does your second tank sit? I think carrying a lot of gas on such an event would be a requirement just to save the time. I don’t think reliability would be to much of a problem in general but you never know. I think it would be a blast just for the hell of it. The cannonball people have a whole lot of money in crews cars and technology to make it happen, we are the antithesis of that and that I like a lot!

"Drive Happy"June 4, 2015 at 6:14 am #264749I was thinking of organizing a “Cannonball Baker Memorial Sea toShining Sea Memorial Trophy Dash” for only cars that were or looked like they were made before 1962. TDs, 356s, Healeys and hot rods. Want to start in Ocean City, but Va Beach would do.
June 4, 2015 at 6:25 am #264750John, here’s what I always carry (VW): First aid kit, fire extinguisher, air compressor, spare dist with points and cap, one extra ign wire, coil, voltage regulator, 15′ #12 wire switch alligator clips on each end, duct tape, iron wire, fuses, fuel filter and of course a Bible. 🙂
If you can make it to the Auto & Air show, I’ll buy you dinner.June 4, 2015 at 10:16 am #264751To Roy’s list…add a spare clutch cable, throttle cable and fan belt.
And an AAA card!PMOSSBERG2015-06-04 10:22:51

June 4, 2015 at 11:27 am #264753Paul’s right of course. Actually,I took two spare fan belts to Carlisle. Only one of them fit, but I couldn’t remember which one, so I took ’em both.
June 4, 2015 at 6:19 pm #264754If I left the cage on my car I could fit one of those Range Rover baskets on top and I COULD carry all that stuff that went into that Speedster. 😉
