    Second question (as previouisly posted)

Does anyone have a rear window in their convertible top that zips open? I have seen pictures of TD replicas with them but can’t identify the kit. Are they something that is made local to them?

    Thanks

    Hey Allen,

All I know for certain is the Classic Roadsters LTD Duchess stock roof had a sewn in rear window.

    Paul,

My CMC/Fiberfab kit, like your Classic Roadster Duchess has the rear window sewn in. And according to the illustrations in the Fiberfab assembly manual, that rear window is also sewn in. Perhaps someone with a Migi will chime in.

The VW based Daytona MiGi is sewn in also.

I have a FF-II that I just purchased back in May — It has a tan cloth top with a zip open rear window.  There are straps on each side of the window with snaps — so the window can be rolled up and snapped in the rolled position.  But I’m not sure if this was a “stock” Fiberfab II top and side curtains.  I’ll upload some pic’s tomorrow.

I have a early Fiberfab kit car. It had a rollup window as you describe. While taking it apart to make pattern for new top came on a label of a Pa upholstery shop label found under a top bow cushion pad. As the top was well worn suspect it was original to the kit. Supect it was supplied to Fiberfab by the shop in Pa. As I have found out Fiberfab kits were built in PA, Florida, Migh, and California.

I did not make my new top as a un built CMC kit was bought and it had 2 tops with it . Both had sewn in windows. As the kit was a later kit suspect the sewn in window was a cost cutting factor for manfacture. Sewn in windows cheaper  to make no zipers to install.

I do like the rollup window better than the sewn in window.

A good upholstery shop should be able to modify the window in your top. I, personally never did it, but when I used her as a daily driver I had a shop install quarter windows in the top for visibility. They did a nice job and it looked good. The zippered window should not be difficult.

Jack: That looks like my  old top. Tag could not be seen untill seams were taken apart. It was hidden well. In sleeve for metal top bow.

     Your car looks nice.

Thanks George.  My seams on the top bow pockets are starting to come loose — it will soon be time for the top to go to the canvas shop to be re-sewn.  I’ll ask them to look for a tag.  I also like Billinparts  idea of having some clear quarter panels put in — this top has a pretty big blind spot as designed.

The car is coming along — the pic’s do not show the missing dash (being sanded, stained, and sealed) and dangling wires — and new hole cut in the dash to raise up the steering column — but that’s a story for another post.

I’m jealous of the zip-in rear window. Must make the top-up ride very nice and breezy.

    Roy,

Its odd that the MiGi rear window is sewn in and the asembly manual for the MiGi II shows it as a zipper open and close like Happyjack’s photos. Things that make you go hmm……………….

Allen, Not really so odd.  My TDr is a Daytona MiGi.  Jack’s car is a Fiberfab MiGi II.  The info that I have is that Daytona sold their molds to Fiberfab.  Fiberfab’s early TDr was very similar to Daytona’s due to the fact that they were just assembling and selling old Daytona parts.  Eventually Fiberfab made some changes to the molds and their TDr morphed into a MiGi II.  Looking closely at the two cars (Jack’s and Mine) reveal quite a few differences.  Even though they may have shared a fiberglass mold, the MiGi II appears to be a heavier build.  Jack’s top looks like it is a reaqlly nice luxurious Sunbrella fabric.  Mine is just a common, run of the mill typical canvas top material found on all convertible cars of the 50-70’s.

I have been looking into a new top myself. One of the top builders suggested a oval rear window.I have never seen an oval rear window on a TD replica or any other car but it would look nice and it would zip out easily.

Oval on a MGTDr.  Sorry, but my opinion is: Yuk!  The heavy duty zippers necessary for out tops really don’t like going around bends unless they are very gentle.  I don’t think that the clear part would be without some serious wrinkles.  Why not look into a roll up top like was recently discussed here.  Happy Jack posted some pictures.

Visibility is bad enough with the tops up without the limited view through an even smaller opening.

If you want to see an oval window, look at a 56 VW Beetle. That was the last year of the oval window. Wouldn’t want an oval window on the TD. Now rear side windows would be nice!
