In an effort to keep my VW-based TD looking as close to original as possible, do any of you who have VW based TDs have a gas cap on the engine cover in the back? Something that looks like the original TD gas cap? If so, how do/did you mount it?

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackJune 28, 2012 at 5:54 pm #250947Allen, I don’t have one but am shopping also. FYI, I sold my Jensen Healey about 6 years ago that had one that was very similar if not exactly the same.
June 28, 2012 at 7:25 pm #250948Looks like it’s just screwed into the fiberglass on mine. Nice little flip-top cap, 4 screws that might be sheet metal or wood screws. Or they might be little bolts with nuts and lock washers under ’em.
Looks about like this. CB has ’em for more like $30 though.
The original TDs had flip-tops that opened to the rear of the car, I believe.
June 29, 2012 at 10:19 am #250949It looks to me like the TD has a flip type cap, opening from the rear and flipping towards the front:

June 29, 2012 at 12:50 pm #250950Thanks Ed and Paul. I think I’ll order the one from CB Performance. No intent on actually using it to fill the tank, just installing it on the engine cover to assist in the “original” look. newkitman2012-06-29 12:50:23

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackJune 29, 2012 at 1:15 pm #250951I was just wondering if a early a Honda and outher motorcycle cap ,the old flip open type used on bikes 60,s through the 70,s would work ??? Dan
June 29, 2012 at 2:56 pm #250952These are similar in style to the orignal TD cap…but pricier than the option Ed provided.
This one on ebay looks good too. But you’ll have to fabricate a way to mount it:PMOSSBERG2012-06-29 15:03:53

The BCW opens from the driver’s side.

June 30, 2012 at 9:44 am #250957I like that.
As my rear cover is still in primer, that would be a nice addition.Thank you.Bill Ascheman

You need to fund a rusty, corroded one!
Or maybe just drill a hole and stuff a rag in it!
Now THAT would be in the spirit of your rat-rod TD!Paul Mossberg
