Is this what old people do? I did a frame off restoration. I was tempted to put it under “Manufacturer Comparison”. Looks better from 18″ or more.
April 21, 2013 at 8:52 pm #255532Very cool, Roy.
The dash is much more TC-ish but the tank and bumpers are TD all the way. Neet car.
April 21, 2013 at 9:13 pm #255533Ed, you are the one that I knew would notice the dash. I bought the TD on ebay for almost $25 incl shipping. Then bought a rear tire for another $8. Stripped the paint from the whole thing. Spent $12 on paint. There was no steering wheel, made one out of copper wire. For the dash, I found only one dashboard on line, with a straight on shot, which was a right hand drive. Experimented with the zoom until it was the right size. Printed it out, cut and pasted just like grade school. Sprayed interior black. Painted hubcaps bumpers, windshield frame. Painted seats. 2 coats primer. 3 coats red. 3 coats clear coat over everything including dash. The time it took me to disassemble and paint and put back together- priceless.
This is the one that I started with:The next one will be better. – Next winter.April 21, 2013 at 11:14 pm #255534Nice job!

"Drive Happy"April 22, 2013 at 7:30 am #255536Roy, I had no idea you made that dash yourself! Welcome to the I-made-my-dashboard-myself club.

April 22, 2013 at 1:13 pm #255538It’s Hubley model 485. (They also made a shorter model) Mine is called 1/14 scale and is 9 inches long.
April 22, 2013 at 2:37 pm #255539Every Carlisle for the last 5 years I have looked for a model of the TD and have never seen one. Lots of sellers there w/ the TC’s and the like, but never TD’s. Hope to find one this year.
April 22, 2013 at 4:38 pm #255540Dale, there are a number of them for sale on ebay.
For the Hubley 485, type “Hubley MG” in the search block. Leave off the TD in the search, and you will get a lot more choices since many of the sellers don’t really know what car the model is of.April 23, 2013 at 1:56 pm #255541OK Roy – bid on one – don’t bid against me – auction over in like 8-9 hours. We will see
April 25, 2013 at 9:45 am #255542Roy I have one of those that I would guess I got about 60 years ago. Mine also is missing a back tire as well as one head light. I can tell you for sure that it has more miles on it than the one I drive. I can rember spending hours and hours with that thing.
CharlieApril 25, 2013 at 10:12 am #255543Charlie, why not buy another tire, and a front grill (which of course includes the headlights)(both are available on ebay) and restore yours. Relive your childhood, get on your hands and knees and push it around going “vroom vroom!”. I did. Felt great. When you are all vroomed out, give it to your grand kids.
April 25, 2013 at 10:25 am #255544Put in my highest price and let it ride – was outbid by a couple of bucks.
April 25, 2013 at 11:00 am #255545Dale, there is really never any way to know how much you were outbid by. The guy who won, could have outbid you by hundreds of dollars but because of the way that ebay handles bids, the winning bid amount is whatever the minimum bid increment is, greater than the second highest bidder.
The important thing is to bid ‘your’ highest price and let it run. Don’t try and second guess after the auction is over. You probably bid on the pretty red one (ebay item # 300892063142) that went for $34.65 + shipping. Eh?April 25, 2013 at 12:19 pm #255546Roy is right. But I have had good luck bidding late on Ebay.
April 26, 2013 at 10:45 am #255547On a related note, saw this and thought someone might be interested. New, unassembled kit from England.

April 26, 2013 at 12:48 pm #255551I have a “decent” but not overly impressive collection of VW toys — I can’t afford to add another brand/model to the equation… 🙂

Slowly coming back from the ashes...April 26, 2013 at 11:23 pm #255552Roy I may have to do that. Its been sitting on a shelf in my den for years. I had never even thought about being able to get parts for it.
April 29, 2013 at 4:39 pm #255553Well Paul, Did you win the Finecast model? Per your request, I laid off the bidding. 🙂
April 29, 2013 at 10:14 pm #255554No. Beat out towards the end. Went for close to $50 USD, plus about $13 for shipping.

April 30, 2013 at 12:57 am #255555I assume you know that Finecast models can still be bought new straight from the factory??
