Ran across this pic of a 1964 VW convertible on a lift, showing the frame rails that VW added to the sides of the floorpan. This was done to offset the structural weakness that resulted from removing the steel top of the VW body. It is done not to strengthen the frame/pan from front to rear — the tunnel provides that strength, but rather to reduce/prevent body twist from side to side.
