Slowly coming back from the ashes...August 9, 2013 at 9:24 pm #257299Thanks to all for the great well wishes on completing my car. A little more info for all: completed 12 more years in air force anddragged kit around four moves, did seven more years with Lockheed, then found a friend to help me. Took two years to build, then original engine had to bereplaced( I touched a crank bearing with my thumb and after 85 miles it failed to properly get lubrication and ruined the crank). So I bought another engine and it runs great. Also, had to sue state DMV to get registration; CMC did not provide me a certificate of origin. So, hope all enjoyed my story, believe me, I could write a book on building the car. Clark
August 9, 2013 at 10:08 pm #257300you touched a crank bearing with your thumb and that ruined the engine??
August 9, 2013 at 10:22 pm #257301Yep! Being an old AF engine technician and engine bearing inspector, its bad ju-ju touching the bearings with bare fingers. The acid in the fingers leaves a fingerprint and then over time attacks the metal of the bearing. That’s why I always wear plastic gloves when building the internal portion of my engines.
Also on hot engine parts you never use a lead pencil. The lead causes the part to heat more at the lead mark causing a crack.newkitman2013-08-09 22:23:49

And I learn something every day here. I knew about not touching bearings. Btu geez, I never heard about the lead pencil thing. Allen, I assume by lead pencil, you really mean graphite?
