Are there any type of tanks that can be used ,instead if the vw one, that may be safer in a collision?  I realize the car offers no protection, but could do without risk of explosion, fire, etc.   Have a first year Fiber Fab MiGi.   Dennis P

Ed’s got pretty much the sole solution. But I say….

“What are you really worried about”?

I’ve been driving my TD since 1982 with Classic Roadsters LTD’s steel ten gallon gas tank sitting on the floor pan in front of the passenger.

I’ve NEVER thought twice about my gas tank.

First, there is science…liquid gas does not burn. Nor will it explode like in the movies or on TV.

Second, there there is theory…I figure if I’m ever in an accident bad enough to crush or otherwise burst the gas tank, I will have far larger issues to deal with than an exploding gas tank (see “first”).

Third, regardless of what is going on around me on the roads, I do tend to drive my TDr far more defensively than my daily driver. Self preservation is the first law of nature.

The real fire risk (in VW based cars at least) is a bad fuel line or fuel filter, dripping gas onto a hot engine case, and causing a fire. And in that case, YOU will get out in time. And the only answer then is a good fire extinguisher or built in fire suppression system.

Drive on friend. And don’t worry about your gas tank.

    Just my humble opinion.

Well said.  Thanks, I often say I am driving a four wheeled motorcycle with large farings and do observe a lot of caution.

I’ve used the same motorcycle comment!

I had the rusted-out tank in my Lafer replaced with a 10-gallon circle track fuel cell — #547-200-010-01 — made by JAZ. It’s a good fit, and the foam filling keeps fuel from sloshing around on curves and corners. One drawback is that I haven’t found a sending unit that works with my VDO fuel gauge. Like Paul and Dennis, though, I think the more important thing is to realize that our cars offer little more protection than a motorcycle or scooter, and to drive defensively.
