Options for mechanical or electronic tach & speedoAnd they even have a 73 – 10 ohm fuel gauge, which is correct fora stock VW sending unit.Just for kicks, I set up a five gauge set for a VW based TD. Total cost would be about $550.Paul Mossberg

"Drive Happy"March 1, 2013 at 1:18 pm #254742I really like those antique-looking yellow ones…
Problem with gauges is that it is essentially an “all or nothing” proposition, requiring you swap them all out, which certainly gets expensive. Looks like I’ll need to repair/replace the black-faced 3-1/8″ VDO tach in my new acquistion – the glass got cracked somehow. I may just see if I can carefully replace the glass… or find a used one on Samba.I’d much rather invest $600 elsewhere — such as engine mods or whatever…Early FF TDr on 69 VW pan

If it’s flat, you have an easy fix. Just carefully, very carefully , pry the bezel off, cut a piece of clear plastic, acetate or whatever you choose, and pop it in.Paul Mossberg

March 1, 2013 at 2:27 pm #254746Hmmm…I could just say go to AutoMeter, do the research and report back to us.
But I guess I’m in a good mood today.Tach only cares about the number of cylinders. And set up instructions would be included.Electronic speedo would need the proper sending unit.AutoMeter.com says mechanical speedos are factory set for a 1:1 ratio. If your car is other than stock, you’d simply need to swap out the drive gear in the speedo. Instructions are included to calculate what you need.As far as replicating the face, white or tan face with antique fonts would be close.Again, go to the site and wander around all the choices. Only you can decide if their options are close enough. In lieu of the custom gauge site, AutoMeter.com has a ton of off the shelf gauge options.PMOSSBERG2013-03-01 14:28:12

March 1, 2013 at 6:40 pm #254747Back when we actually sold speedo gears, the rule of thumb was the change in the number of teeth on the driven gear (the gear at the end of the cable) was apx. 7mph per tooth. Add a tooth to slow the speed indicated. Decrease the number of teeth to increase the indicated speed.
Whoops…
I just remembered that the VW models run off a wheel hub. You guys disregard this information.Bill Ascheman

March 1, 2013 at 9:26 pm #254749Wow. 5 gauges for $550? I used Autometer in my old Chevy and they were good.
Doing a 5-inch each Tach and Speedo plus 2-inch fuel, oil and volts or amps, in mint green with black numbers, black pointers–this would get you right in the neighborhood of the original TDs. I’d do it for sure if I had not just done all my guages.
The price is very good for what’s on offer.
Ah. Just made a 4 pc kit with 5-inch gauges & it summed to $670. That’s more in line with the market, and still very good, even though there’s no mint green option and the fonts on offer aren’t really much lie what MGs used. I went with beige with green lighting. The domed glass is prtty key and the bezels are good too, but the pointer choices disappoint.
It’s a lot of money when you’re trying to get a project on the road.
But if I were rebuilding one right now I would consider it very strongly. Next to the steering wheel, there’s nothing more people don’t check out than the dash. The engine is a poor third place (except for the gearheads).
I think AutoMeter is going to do quite well with this.
