From the day that I bought my TDr, the oversized and very un-TD looking barn door handle that served as my grab bar has bothered me.
So, someday it will happen to you, that when asked “What do you want for Christmas?”, you really have no idea. Here was my answer to that question:Barn Door Handle:A bit more stylish and TDish. These were made and sold by MG Mitten in the 1960-70’s:Royal 2014-02-05 13:21:16 February 5, 2014 at 3:11 pm #259556Nice!
What is the distance between the mounting holes? That info would be helpful for anyone thinking about swapping a “non-MG” grab bar for something cooler.

February 5, 2014 at 5:14 pm #259557I’ve been thinking of a totally different, more utilitarian layout with the “OS handle” more readily accessible…

Slowly coming back from the ashes...February 5, 2014 at 5:20 pm #259558It looks like all that Royal had to do to cover the bottom mounting hole was to move the sticker to the right. Nifty way to finish it off.

Steve, that’s almost all I had to do. I also had to make some rubber pads under the feet since for the top holes since the old ones were a bit too far apart.February 5, 2014 at 7:41 pm #259560OK Roy…I’ll try again… 😉

Kent, scroll down on that page and you see this original MG design for an underdash grab bar:
Given the thickness of our wood dashes, I suspect this would mount more firmly than on an original.
Here is how it looks installed:

February 5, 2014 at 8:41 pm #259563Paul et al, The distance between the top two holes is 7/8″ and then there is a third hole 3-3/4″ down for the bottom attachment. I sent him a drawing of my holes in the dash, he put his handle on it and sent me a picture of how it would cover. Very accommodating.
Roy,Good morning. I still make the reproduction curved grab handles with MG logo for the MG TD and offer them in LH and RH fitment. These are made from the old “MG Mitten” molds from the 1950s and are designed so your nervous passenger may actually use them, even with a gloved hand. Cost is $65 for each handle, mailing to any address in the US is included. A popular option is to mount both LH and RH handles in the cockpit, for this I discount a pair for $120, again mailing included. You may mail a check to the address below, call with a credit card number, or use paypal to sculptart@hotmail.com. Let me know if you mail a check so I set the handle aside for you as my inventory is getting low.Roy,I did as you suggested laid out a diagram and played with the position of the handle. I think with some positioning this is going to work for you. I have attached photos showing the layout and a suggested position which will result in only one original screw hole remaining on the lower edge of the dash.If interested, his name is Ben Cordsen, email sculptart@hotmail.com. -
