The Robb Report is not one of my regular reads, but this is quite nicely done and worth a few minutes of your time: http://robbreport.com/automobiles/pursuits-grand-day-out

1600 cc Type 1 engineDecember 19, 2013 at 7:44 pm #259054Great read, and brought back memories. My last visit to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison and up to Grand Mesa, I had 3 kids in the back of my VW camper. We camped on Grand Mesa and went on west from there to Utah…

Slowly coming back from the ashes...December 19, 2013 at 9:04 pm #259055Man, I’ve been on that road (and down that canyon). A little hairy in the snow.
Having also driven Monarch Pass in an open convertible, in the snow, I’ve very much wanted to try the same in Bridget.edsnova2013-12-19 21:18:55
December 21, 2013 at 12:05 am #259056Ed, you are definitely from hardier stock than I am if you’ve driven through snow in an open convertible.

1600 cc Type 1 engineDecember 21, 2013 at 10:19 am #259057Left from Gunnison on Easter Sunday, 2003 in a ’93 Pontiac Sunbird. Started that morning in a hot tub. The temp in Gunnison was maybe 60 at 8 a.m. and rising–very comfortable top-down weather for a guy with a good jacket and nice heat.
An hour later I was whatever it is–4000 feet?–higher heading toward the pass. Snow squall cut visibility to about 50 feet and covered the road in minutes. I was laughing, then I started drifting toward the guard rail…. Slowed to about 20 mph and started laughing again as I realized the top was still down.I could have raised it on the fly, but I didn’t think I could reach the passenger side latch while driving, and didn’t want to distract myself from the business at hand. No good place to pull off, of course. Then it was over. Another five miles or so of slowness through like an inch or two of snow.December 21, 2013 at 2:56 pm #259058It would be a real great day today for a drive except…my TD isn’t complete yet. Dang! Its 83 and sunny out at the moment. Working the TD doors. back to it after a quick lunch.

"Drive Happy"December 21, 2013 at 8:48 pm #259063I’d have been out. Lately on weekends I just take the engine out and put it back in.
I am getting fairly proficient at that at least.December 21, 2013 at 8:57 pm #259064Took about a 45 minute drive w/ my TD to the range – fired a few rounds and drove the back roads home.
Great day here – 65 degrees +/-December 21, 2013 at 9:25 pm #259065Dale, sounds just like my day. Did exactly the same ride this am and shooting this pm. Since this is the anything goes general discussion, can you tell me where I can buy 22cal ammo? EVERYBODY local is out? Seems like most/all of the big suppliers are out also.
December 22, 2013 at 12:21 pm #259066There is an article in the current American Rifleman on the ammo situation. Bottom line, more shooters and folks are stocking up. The ammo manufacturers have started gearing up, but expect shortages for at least the next 6 months. On the driving side, we are going thru our typical winter cycle of warm front/rain, cold front/clear. Mostly rain the last few days, looks like we’ll have a nice Xmas, though.
