Another newbie here. Proud owner of a British Coach Works basket case. Documented on the “My Project Forum”, under the title, “Another project reported”.
Anyone in the SF Bay Area have a BCW Chevette they could show me? The manual is sparse in details and mine came in pieces.
Looking forward to getting on the road and being part of the MG community.
May 21, 2011 at 5:23 pm #244817Hey Almost,
You mentioned that the instructions you have for your kit is “sparse in details”. Have you looked at the Chevy Chevvette manual in the “Downlaod Manuals” tab on the right? Take a look. It may be the same that you have or may not. Worth a look anyway. Also check the other downloadable manuals. You may get some better detail in one of the other manuals. I was missing two sheets for the seat build of my VW based TD and found them in the (you’ll love this) Chevette manual.

May 22, 2011 at 4:56 pm #244819That dosen’t look like any Chevette engine I ever saw before. Sure it’s not one of them rare Corvette-based TD kits?
May 23, 2011 at 11:34 am #244820Ed, it’s a 215 c.i.d. aluminum Buick V8. He wrote in anther thread about the car.
Funny, those engines were a flop when intoduced in the 1960 Buick and almost the same motor in the Olds F-85. The heads were slightly different and one-way interchangeable between the motors.
In the late 60’s, GM sold the tooling to Rover, who used them in the MG8, an MGB-GT variant, a few Europe only car models and until the late 90’s in the Land Rover! Go figure…people were paying $50K for an SUV powered by 1950’s GM technology!
Google “Les Gonda” and see a really trick MG8 road racer that races the SVRA circuit.
May 23, 2011 at 11:58 am #244821Yeah, saw that after I posted, Mark. I think those little V8s are hot stuff & in my fantasy life (the life in which I actually have skills in the garage, plus time, plus money) I would build one up stout & stuff it in a Simpson re-bodied Miata Italia & put some funky early ’60s induction on top.
Then I’d learn to speak Italian too and cruise it around at absolute top speed with one hand on the horn and the other one gesticulating wildly at all the other drivers.
May 23, 2011 at 3:48 pm #244822At one of the SVRA events I attened at Watkins Glen, there was a guy with one of these in a “track only” Triumph TR-3. It had 4 Webers on it. He never had it running as good as it should though.
Les Gonda’s MG8 eats small block powered Cobra’s for breakfast.
You sound ready for the I-95 commute!
