    Just wanted to say Hi.

I have an ’83 London Roadster that is cream with red detailing and a

red interior. I am looking for a few replacement parts- a right-side

mirror, the headlamp grills, mostly minor stuff. Oh, and maybe a top

one day – I had to do a bit of repair.

Pretty sure its a ’69 VW engine.

Hi Karen, Thanks for the pictures, that’s a good looking London Roadster!! I have a yellow LR that I’ve owned since 1994 My wife now says it is her car since I got the BCW about two years ago.

Feel free to ask questions, we enjoy sharing our ”knowledge”.

BTW, the mirrors on your car are mounted opposite from most of our cars. If you order a replacement for the right side ,you will get one like is on your left side. Ithink you need to get a left side mirror and move theone on your left fender to the right side.

The mirrors are available at Moss Motors ,Victoria British and several other sorces on the web.

    Karen,

If you are looking for the fender mirrors, here ya go:

    http://www.mossmotors.com/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexI D=37025

I strongly recommend item “D”, the convex lenses. I have them on both fenders.

Trying to find a source for the headlamp grills….stay tuned.

And if you want to know the exact year of your engine, the engine number is stamped into the base of the generator stand. Post the number and we’ll be able to tell you.

These are the headlamp grills you are looking for. But $80 is crazy. I’ll keep searching.

Of course I saw the same ones on another site for $96!

Just come to the import kit car show in Carlisle PA in May. I bet several vendors in the flea market will have them. Probably for $10. LOL! Or one of us will buy them and mail them to you!

Search  Victoria British . In their catalog the mirrors are on page 33 , $14.95 ea part # 9-182 lh convex, part # 9-183 rh convex.

The head light stone guards are on page 96 ,part # 9-265 $11.95 pr.

Victoria British do not list parts for the TD ,they only go back to the MG A ,but these parts are the same on both the A and the TD. I purchased the mirrors , caught them on sale for $10.95, and was pleased with the quality and customer service as well.

Hi Karen…just took a look at your car.

VERY nice! I really like the pinstriping!

A minor observation….the builder swapped the fender mirrors. The mirror stem should bends towards the outside of he car, not in.

I mentioned it above, but convex mirrors on both sides is really worth it. It gives you some margin for error in getting them adjusted and gives you a much broader view behind you.

    Nice car!

Thanks so much – You guys are amazing!

The show in PA sounds like a really great idea.

I am working through some other issues with the car. Luckily I found a

shade-tree mechanic who used to work for VW. He has gotten the

engine stable – it now runs on all cylinders and the automatic choke is

reconnected – and, no, the push button on the dash was not a manual

choke as I was told when I got the car – it’s for the windshield washer

fluid which is not hooked up. 😉

Oh, and if you pushed the horn, you got a bit of a shock – literally. Pretty hilarious stuff. That’s temporarily fixed.

My biggest issues right now are with a gas smell when it sits in the

garage and the right turn signal does not work. Other than that, it

seems to be in pretty good shape.

Welcome aboard Karen. Great looking TD. I too lik the pinstriping. I second what Paul said about the mirrors.  But you are way further along on yours. I’m still working on building mine. Loking for a good donor chassis.

You might look into a set of windwings. I understand they really help with preventing the wind from entering the car as you drive down the road.

Again…welcome aboard and enjoy the TD.

Hi Karen I’m new here also but can’t resist throwing my two cents in. First welcome and I believe the information available here is worth taking advantage of . As to you fuel smell I’m assuming that your using a VW donor undercarriage fuel tank also that on mine it had to be the original with the VW. It was so brittle that when I went to look at it and moved it it crumbled in my hand so don’t over look this as being the source of the fuel smell.

    Hi Karen,

Not sure what year your VW chassis is but the fuel smell is probably from old, brittle fuel vent hoses. And a lot of times one of the hoses from the canister is either missing or broken off. Start off by replacing the fuel vent hoses. Get the braided hoses. I usually get mine from a VW show vendor for about $1 a foot. Same for any fuel and vacuum hoses. And if your brake hoses are over 5 years old, I’d replace those as well. Stopping your TD is just as important as going. These are a few simple fixes that shouldn’t be costly and takes very little time and will enhance your driving tijme and pleasure.

FYI – New parts are on their way – many thanks for the info on the convex mirrors and headlamp grills. I went out on my own and ordered tail light lenses too – we’ll just see how well you have taught me.
If I actually install them myself do I get to say that I work on my own car? Did I mention I have zero mechanical competence?

I believe both the brake system and fuel system were redone within the last 3 years. Of course I was also told the push button on the dash was the choke.

I had to buy a funnel in order to put gas into the car. The pipe leading to the tank is too long so the gas just flows back out. BIG surprise the first time. My mechanic did go through the fuel system a bit – and why yes, duct tape was mentioned – as in don’t remove the duct tape that is holding down the fuel line between the tank in the front and the engine in the rear.

The London Roadster uses a custom made aluminum  gas tank that mounts low in the front compartment leaving lots of useable ”trunk” space, all of which is nicely carpeted. That’s the good part, now for the bad. They used a braided hose to connect tank to the fill cap which is a marine version but they attached it to the outside of the left hood side panel, partly in the louvers. This is an almost positive way to identify a London Roadster as I know of no other kit manufacturer that use this setup. I’ve looked a my LR gas filler since 1994 and have always wondered why they put it where they did. As Karen said ,it does not fill well either and any gas spilled runs down the side hood panel and on to the fender. I filled mine VERY slowly for years but recently found that if I push the nozzle as far as possible into the fill cap, it seems to work better.

Karen, IMHO if you install the tail light lenses, you can say that you work on your own car. That’s a good place to start.

     Hi Karen,

I was browsing in the photo gallery and came up on your new pictures. The car looks good in the spring setting with the flowers blooming. The ”52” NC tag is a nice touch and a good match for the color scheme too.

I have a set of headlight grille’s that I can’t use. Not legal in NY. If you haven’t got any yet I have them. I beleive they are the original ones that London Roadster used.
