Howdy everyone. Just introducing myself… the Old TinkerMan. I just aquired an 82 built Fibrefab MGTD on a 68 VW fram. Very nice, clean, well fit little car. I plan to put an alternator kit on it, as it has to turn close to 2000 RPM to charge the battery sufficiently. If any of ya’ll have advice on an alternator kit, i’d appreciate a howdy… thetinkerman@juno.com. We’re in East Texas.

Use a Bosch #AL82N alternator. You will have to change to an “alternator style” fuel pump and fuel pump pushrod (short). A generator style will not clear the alternator.
You will also have to change to an alternator stand. The generator stand will also not clear the alternator. An alternator stand works for both though.
The alternator is only rated 55 amps, but it’s enough for these cars. It’s a true “1-wire” set up as far as wiring. The voltage regulator is internal and you will end up not needing your current one.
The generator and alternator use the same pulley though.
I ran the hot (10 ga.) wire from the alternator to the battery terminal on the starter.
The only other connection is for the idiot light. You have to run a wire to the idiot light side of the wire disconnected from your external regulator.
The AL82N comes with a simple re-wiring diagram.
Might I suggest a vendor or two: http://www.aircooled.net or http://www.wolfsburgwest.com
