Originally, my switch was located in the dash, but I have opted to put in a dash plate which got rid of the ignition switch hole.
I have spot for it in the steering column, but can’t find or figure out what should go inside the column. I know there ought to be some V-Dub fans out there who could instantly point me in the right direction.
Excuse my buddy in the second picture haha
I can provide additional pictures if needed. Basically, I do not know what switch I need to fit into the steering column, and I would like some insight before I buy something because I am running low on my budget for the car.
Thanks,

Are you planning on installing a new car radio, something that looks retro?
I’ve just removed my radio, was not working and looked too modern. I covered the gap with an MG blanking plate which I brought on Ebay.

I am thinking about creating a glove box for the space, but I am not sure how I would approach it. I am not the best with wood working. In fact, I know next to nothing about it. I am more than willing to give it a shot, but he job has to be easily doable on a budget and able to be completed from the parking lot of my college apartment.
I am not against putting a radio back in, I am just not sure what to do. I am not trying to make the car look like a TD on the inside, I just want it to look somewhat period correct, so matching any aesthetics from the 30s-40s-50s.
If you have any ideas in general, ( radio suggestions, how to make a glove box, how to make the plate cover the gap, other ideas on what to the gap cover with, what ignition switch to use, etc) I would love to hear your input 🙂
Thanks and Gig’ em,

March 23, 2025 at 9:46 pm #309315The VW column is from a 69 or so and the ignition switch and columm lock are available.
If it were me I’d put a universal key switch or maybe a true TD key switch and maybe a pushbutton (or pull!) ignition switch in that original MG center dash plate.
March 23, 2025 at 10:15 pm #309321This is the gap that I covered and the blanking plate I brought on Ebay. Is your gap slightly wider? If so would you consider cutting out a larger chrome or stainless plate that goes behind the black plate?
cheers
