    @winnipaw

    Has anyone made their stock VW wheel into a clone of the original TD wheel? I’m really tired of looking at the fake wire hubcaps. Seems to me that the stock VW hubcap could be modified to show an MG Emblem. Has anyone seen or done this? I’ve seen some pictures of members cars with steel wheels, but I dont know if they are VW wheels or Chevette. Thanks

    Check out my TD in the photo gallery, PMOSSBERG

    The wheels are stock VW wheels, painted with the proper British gray (available from Eastwood).

    The caps are plain VW chrome hubcaps, with original TD wheel centers.

    Not exact, but close enough for me. And a major improvement on the wire baskets I had on prior to this.

    TD wheels had round holes, not oval as the VW. And the hubcaps area smaller with a bead rolled into the perimater.

    TD hubcaps will not fit the VW wheel. You would have to weld or rivet clips onto the VW wheel. Or I guess you could redrill original style TD wheels to fit the VW bolt pattern.

    Exactly what I’m looking for, thanks Paul. Now I just have to locate a set of VW caps. Love that convertible bus.

    @pmossberg

    I just took a quick search around the web and cannot find the hubcaps I used. They look like the standard VW cap, but the center circle is smooth; it does not have the emobssed VW logo.

    I’ll check further and let you know what I come up with.

    The reproduction MG TD wheel centers are available from Moss Motors (and I am sure other vintage British car suppliers).

    It would be alot easier to not deal with that embossed VW logo. I suppose I could just cut it out. Whatever, its going to take a bit of work. Thank you for the help…I do love the look of your wheels. Now on to stripping the wheels and paint.

    @pmossberg

    You can’t just cut it out.

    The MG TD Center is on a post, you drill a half inch hole through the center of the hubcap, the MG center attaches with spring clip on teh back.

    I have not yet found the source for the hubcaps I bought. But I am sure I will track it down.

    I’m still unable to find the “nipple” or “Porshce 356” style hubcps with a plain center.

    I found several sites selling the hubcap with an Empi badge in the center

    http://www.vwparts.net/MB10-1056.html

    It looks like you might be able to remove the Empi logo.

    I found my hubcaps at JC Whitley blank caps without any logo.  Ordered MG logo from Moss Motors

    I dug all over the JC Whitney site and could not find the “nipple” caps with plain centers.

    They do have plain chrome “smoothies”

    Bailey, do you have a link or part number?

    I saw them. The product number is 22863G

    I don’t think you want them.

    I’m pretty sure the embossed Empi logo is bigger than the MG TD center medallion.

    Might want to buy just one to check it out.

    JC Whitney no got them anymore???  The dirty rats!!!  The last time I order some was about a year ago.  They are plain without any logo on them.  Surely someone else would have something like this.  Whitley called them baby moon style caps.

    Leon,

    No. Mine are the Porsche 356 style “nipple” caps. (Not my name, that’s really how they are known.)

    About five years ago, I was able to get them with no Porsche or Wolfsburg crest. I drilled the holes, attached the TD medallions with cotter pins and I was done.

    I can find the nipple hubcaps now, but only with a Porsche or Empi crest medallion. I think the medallions would be removable. But I would have to see one to be sure.

    Paul, The search goes on…I’ll see if I can find the “nipples”. I wonder if the porsche caps fit the corresponding VW 4 lug wheel for a 1971.

    Try some of the aftermarket VW houses like aircooled.net and wolfsburgwest. Google is your friend!

    They had a VW swap meet at Englishtown Raceway Park in October and I saw about 20 sets of these hub cabs, NOS and used…bummer!

    I’m starting to think the only place we can find the non-logo hub caps, either nipple style or flat is at a VW show/swap meet. And like any of those, sometimes you score and other times the person selling wants a fortune. 1st show of the season here in the southeast is Mar. 11.
