Ed, that was a fun video. Thanks.

It seems that this was run as a TDS (time, distance, speed) road rallye which is quite different from a race.  These guys in the video got penalized for going too fast, but in the last leg they said “damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead” and I don’t blame them a bit.  To any of you who have never been in a rallye, my advice is:  GO!
There are a few different types of rallyes but they are all fun and your TDr’s ability would not be the weak link.   I have even seen vans full of the entire family in some of them.  Many of the car clubs host these rallyes throughout the year.  Generally all comers are invited.  The last rallye that I entered, 3 years ago, was a Corvette rallye with about 30 cars. that I ran in my Mercedes 230SLK.  Autocross master speed demon Ed (with his exceptional #68 TDr) won’t believe this but; I won.  1st overall.  I took my trophy home and retired. The Corvette dealer that sponsored the event was not a happy camper.
    They are all a hoot.

I roped Karen into the local MG club’s Get the Dust Off ralleye a coule years ago. With no trip odometer or stopwatch, it was something of a challenge. We did not win but, remarkably, we did not come in last.

Wow!  ….and your marriage survived.  I always tell anyone who is interested: DO NOT take your wife as a navigator.  A friend is good, a wife, – never.  The rallye often starts out like a sailboat race.  You know – “just for fun”.  They almost never end that way.

Did a couple TSD rallyes in he MG (over twenty years ago).

Called One Lap of Connecticut, was a fund raiser for a children’s hospital.

First time out, I finished first in the rookie class, with a total score of only 43 points…and I actually zeroed one timed section.

If you own a TDr and are not in the Registry, please go to https://tdreplica.com/forums/topic/mg-td-replica-registry/ and register (you need to copy and paste the link)

Patti and I did a TSD Rally back in the ’80’s. We were lucky we didn’t kill each other.

Here’s my blog on the Dust-Off ralleye. I’d like to do it again but, really, navigating is the hard job and it was a bit unfair to demand Karen do it without any equipment.

That said, an ALL- couple all-TDr ralleye would be hilarious. If only we had someone to map it out and manage it for us.
That said, if anyone wants to visit MD for next year’s Get the Dust Off, we’ll join you and put you up if you want.

Navigating is most definitely the hard job in a TSD rallye.  Actually, even in a Gimmick rallye it is the tougher job.

I really was quite serious when I suggested that one should never pair up with their wife on this kind of a race.  My hat is off to you and Karen if you would do it again as a team.  I think that you and Karen would enjoy a Gimmick rallye and I would bet that you would do well.  It is a totally different sort of motoring event and bears little resemblance to a TSD.

I, once, was in one (TSD) that was intensely competitive.   Fully instrumented.  No fun at all.  It was like exceptionally hard work and I (sitting as the navigator) was totally mentally exhausted after only about 4 hours.  The Navigator ought to get the trophy with a little ribbon or something like that given to the owner/driver.

It really is a lot of work to set one of these things up correctly, and man all the checkpoints etc.  I got involved in it once, long ago.  I am a bit surprised that Carlisle doesn’t do something like this as part of its Import and Kit show though.

They would need an on-site Divorce Court.

Karen is an extremely good sport but I didn’t say she’d do it again. She does Carlisle and the Pumpkin Run. She does short fruit-picking trips and would consider another cruise. She is going with me on Wednesday to Pittsburgh to drive a no-time rally the next day. Here to Pittsburgh is 5 hours, give or take. (see other thread for details).

Karen likes the attention we get in the car. It’s pretty intoxicating, as you all well-know. But I don’t want to push my luck.
