Had a bit of time whilst waiting for a service tech to get to the house and browsed Painless and Rebel wire kits. Each mention a Neutral Safety Switch in their kits. What is the purpose of this switch?
Thanks

Neutral start switch makes sure you are not in gear when you start your car. If not used car can move when you start without one and you have car in gear.
Thankfully, I don’t have one. If I did, I wouldn’t have gotten home the night my clutch cable broke. 😉

On my way home from purchasing a 911s about 25 years ago, my clutch cable broke. I learned how to shift without a clutch. But timing stoplights (so you don’t have to stop) remains the tricky part.Â
Hadn’t thought of that being an option on these cars, I’ve managed to try starting in gear only a couple times. Maybe I’ve learned my lesson by now. Been more than 25 years since I had “4 on the floor” until getting my TDr.
My Yamaha motorcycle has this too, wired at the clutch lever and shifter so doubly “safe”. Many people bypass it the moment there’s electrical problems. A motorcycle probably jumps forward more than a car, and a car less likely to fire up I guess.
To my knowledge, no standard 4 speed Bug had a neutral safety switch. The Autostick may have had one as part of the electric clutch servo wiring, but it has been too long since I was around one, that I can’t recall.KentT2016-01-15 11:33:00
