Well, it took me 6 hours to fabricate and make and install my new Grant’s #1057 “banjo” steering wheel. It sure is fancy! But, it has a 3″ dish which means that I have less room and with my 210#, I’m not yet convinced that I am willing to give up the space. Going to go for a ride as soon as the weather clears and make a decision. What do you guys think?
March 21, 2013 at 8:49 pm #255178Looks really good Roy. I think its a keeper. Nice job man and that still is a nice looking TD. When you first said Banjo I thought…”I didn’t know Roy was taking lessons.”newkitman2013-03-21 20:51:04

I love the retro Banjo steeting wheel and its healthy too ..it will keep your weight downits a keeper..March 21, 2013 at 10:19 pm #255180I love the look. But safety behind the wheel is paramount.
And it’s not just being able to fit behind the wheel. It’s all about control. You’ll know the answer as soon as you drive through your first turn.

March 22, 2013 at 8:15 am #255181+1 on Paul. The Flat4 Banjo is flat and could go there if this one needs to go back.
The wood and spokes do look nice though.
March 22, 2013 at 9:20 am #255182Roy, it sure looks good. Hope it works to your satisfaction.
SamMarch 23, 2013 at 3:21 pm #255183Wow I’ like the look . Dan R

"Drive Happy"March 23, 2013 at 5:23 pm #255185Darn, after all that work (and $$) it just doesn’t work for me. This is all Ed’s fault, – while we were all at the show in VaBch, I looked at his and decided that I just had to have a banjo. It’s not the wheel that’s too big, it is the fact that it has a 3″ dish. Not enough clearance for me and that’s after being on a diet for 2 months. Gonna sell it. I’m pretty sure that this wheel is not a true “current” model 1057 but an earlier model which has gold highlighted horn ring and gold where the mahogany wheel attaches to the spokes. Very classy. I was previously unaware that if you take out 6 screws, the wheel comes off the spokes. I guess that would be convenient if someone wanted to refinish it or to change it entirely.
So Bill, this was going to be my wild card and help me with a good show at the Carlisle AutoX . The old wheel is going back on tomorrow. (It’s real easy to switch wheels.)March 23, 2013 at 5:30 pm #255186Sorry Roy.
But it’s WAY better safe…than sorry!Paul Mossberg

March 23, 2013 at 7:13 pm #255187Don’t suppose it’s modable?
What if you unscrewed the hub pieces, straightened the spokes, cut them a bit shorter near the center and re-assembled?

March 23, 2013 at 7:34 pm #255188March 23, 2013 at 7:36 pm #255189Or…you could cut about 5 inches out of your steering column and re-mount it, pulling the wheel closer to the dash board.
March 23, 2013 at 8:23 pm #255190Bummer…..it sure did look good!!
SamMarch 23, 2013 at 8:39 pm #255191Thanks Ed. Not moldable. Center hub is not takeapartable. Just the outer. Then, to straighten would (as you know) make the spokes too long. Cutting and rewelding (stainless steel) and making it look good is almost unthinkable. Too hard.
Your second suggestion from Summit: I think I like my old wheel better. The shorten the column idea may work. I will investigate tomorrow with new optimism.Really, Ed. Thanks. Maybe Santa will bring me a Flat 4 banjo next Christmas.March 24, 2013 at 5:01 pm #255192Roy I would be happy to send some pics of the Flat 4 banjo steering when and if you are ready.

March 24, 2013 at 5:07 pm #255193John, pls do. I am really interested in how it mounts. Also, what is the diameter of the wheel, I see 15, 15 1/2, and 16 depending on where I read. Thanks,
March 25, 2013 at 7:38 am #255194Roy,
