Hi,
My inquiry is a little more general than just a Classified Ad, so I am posting here. I also want to introduce myself.
My dad bought a Fiberfab Migi II TD Replica in Italian Red kit some
years ago. Dad never got beyond inventorying the boxes. The kit has been
sitting in my folks’ garage since, carefully stored on shelves he built
for the purpose.Alas, Dad passed away in the mid-90s. Mom is in the process of cleaning
out decades of clutter, including the Migi.
Yes, we’ve been looking at the kit for probably 20 years. (I can find out exact purchase date from my brother if anyone cares.)We believe the kit is complete, including the builder’s manual. We have
no idea if there is any interest in the kit, either as a complete
project or a source of parts. Can you shed any light? The kit is located in the DC area.
As for me, I live in New Hampshire. While the thought of building my own TD to cruise the back roads on a summer day is a pleasant one, I already have too many irons in the fire.
Thanks, in advance, for your help.
Eric
April 14, 2013 at 12:00 am #255449Hello Eric,
Welcome aboard.
The world’s flea market, eBay, is likely your best way to sell the kit. I anticipate it would sell somewhere between $1 and $2k. But one never really knows with an auction.
Post in in the classifieds section here as well. We do get visitors looking for cars or kits.
But just a thought… It sat for this many years, why not hang on to it for a couple more, until those other irons cool off?

Thanks for the suggestions. I’ll gather more specific info for a Classified entry and I’ll poke around eBay to get some history.
I’m curious though. Dad’s kit was to be built atop some version of a VW Beetle. What is the availability of suitable VW stock?

April 14, 2013 at 8:54 am #255452Donor VWs are out there. Just put VW or Bug in the search box on Craigslist & you’ll see a bunch. New full pans are available too but are a bit pricier than most hobbyists would like. All the mechanical parts are plentiful.
If you post it to the ‘bay be sure to include lots of photos and–hate to say it–do yet another inventory of parts & list anything missing. If it’s really a “complete” kit it’ll sell pretty easily.
April 14, 2013 at 8:55 am #255453Eric,
Thanks for posting – you have found the bunch of guys who care the most about these replica’s.
I live in the DC area as well and was able to get my car on the road a few years back.
VW doners are not as easy to find now days, but still out there. As an example a local vintage VW guy receives old cars and breaks the down for the usable parts and does have some old pans around w/ titles. One would have to put some parts together but doable w/ a little mix and matching.
I think you first order of business is to post in our want ad’s. I wish I had the option of buying a new kit like yours before I built the one I ended up w/ – it would have saved me a huge amount of work.

April 14, 2013 at 10:22 am #255457Ed, I think 73 would be rack and pinion? Might be a problem for the build.
April 14, 2013 at 10:31 am #255458Wish you’d keep it and build her. TDs are great little cars and fun to drive. But if you can’t, for donor cars try http://www.thesamba.com classified section. Search for at least a 70 or better VW beetle chassis because those are the VWs that have the IRS transaxle. They still made standard beetles (ball joint front ends)till 73 maybe 74. And get a beetle chassis not a thing or Karmann Ghia chassis which are different. Super Beetles have a whole different front end and are doable but a lot more mod work on the chassis.Allen Caron

I think the change in rear suspension took place over the 1968 model year. Auto-stick transmissions, introduced in 1968, were IRS, and by 1969 the manual transmission was also…Early FF TDr on 69 VW pan
Slowly coming back from the ashes...April 14, 2013 at 11:08 am #255460My chassis is a 69 and it is IRS.
April 14, 2013 at 11:23 am #255461KentT – I knew it was that way with the Karmann Ghia which I’m most familiar with. Wasn’t sure if the IRS came to the Beetle prior to 70 because I worked only 70 to 73 beetles. Wasn’t the 68 a one year only body as well? My boss has a 68 beetle and getting parts for it is getting difficult for his year. newkitman2013-04-14 11:33:48

I AM tempted, but am thus far resisting. I think a really cool project would be to do the car as an electric conversion. I’d miss that VW boxer sound though.

April 14, 2013 at 9:32 pm #255464doable, and done. I looked at doing it when I got Bridget but these guys (and the expense) talked me out of it. As a project to build, though, makes more sense. You could incorporate the battery boxes and bracing into the chassis as you go.
As for missing that “clatter-jet 50 hp sound,” I guess it takes all kinds…
