This will probably sound crude or verv elementary since I’m not too cp smart but here goes anyway.
We are in the Chevy/Ford section now. Click on the blue arrow at the top left of the screen. You will see a list of topics. Look down the list and you will see Chevette transmissions. Several posts down is a post by Pink MG that details the trans issue.
If you go allthe way back to the top of any thread you will see two rows of icons One on the right will say ”photo gallery”. Click on it and a list of names will appear. Schroll down and click on Pink MG.
If I were smarter ,I could link you to what you are looking for but this will get you started Hope it helps.
September 2, 2011 at 9:23 am #246126I read his post earlier, some useful stuff in there but without any manual
to flesh it out I’m unsure where to begin…mostly because I think what I
can see under the car is likely the tranny mount and not the bearing. On
the other hand, if the mount has been collapsed for some time the
bearing is probably stressed to the point of replacement.
Must be the diff between Safari and other browsers, no blue arrow at the
top left but I did cruise PinkMGs photos and 7 of them are missing and
that’s probably what I need to see.
Most likely I’ll just jack the little car up high enough to crawl under and go
have me a good look-see. I can post some pictures in the hopes some of
you can tell me what I’m looking at.
Not my first car, or my first project, so I know the mechanics of how
things work I just need some guidance on these seemingly common
failure points so I don’t chase my tail needlessly. I’ve already sourced the
Carrier Bearing assembly but I’m going to have a go at the tranny mount
first before boosting $300+ to the west coast.
Golly, I’m just dying to take this through the N. AL and N. GA mountains
but I really need the transmission and suspension sorted first.
September 2, 2011 at 10:28 am #246127Ed, Pink MG’s pics in the second and third row of his gallery are the ones that show the car with the original BCW chassis trans mount and also the mount as Mark redisigned it to allow the complete mount and bracket that attaches it to the chassis to be removed from the bottom of the car.
Apparently BCW installed the engine and trans and THEN attached the body but the fiber glass tunnel does not have enough clerance above the trans to allow it to raise high enough to clear the plate on the chassis that it attaches to.
Mark sawed the tunnel into crossways near the front of the forward extension on the rearend. Then he drilled out the rivets that held the tunnel to the floor and firewall allowing the tunnel to be removed .
He the sold the car to me and I reassembled it . Some of the pictures in his gallery show the car in my garage and as it looked after I got it together.
Chevette manual will describe how to remove the trans from a Chevette but would not cover the BCW application. I doubt if there has been anything published to cover this as the BCW manual would most likely only covered the assembly not repair and maintanance.
The U-joint may have been able to help absorb some of the play from the worn mount.and the bearing at the front of the rearend may be ok. Other info tells me that there is usually some movement here which is concidered normal.
