NY Registration?

    I just purchased a 1952 MG kit car. It was registered in VT as a ’74 VW beetle (the chasis it’s built on) and it’s insured as a ’52 MG.
    In NY where I wish to register the car, DMV tells me I’ll have to file for a new VIN and have it inspected at a special shop.
    Am I just getting myself into a headache here?
    Will I have to jump thru hoops to get this registered in NY?
    If someone knows the details I’d like to hear from you.

    I just retitled mine as a streetrod in Maryland — Rules allow for 25 calendar years and substantial modification — exempts me from the annual emissions inspection and the inspection at the time of transfer of title — do not know if NY has same type of category
