Greg: Is your engine a single port or dual port? If unsure check serial number of engine. Check serial number with the list on SAMBA VW. They will have year of engine. 71 and later engines have a dog house oil cooler installed. It is slightly different than the earlier ones. Larger oil passages.

Some engines use a remote oil filter They can be mounted almost anywere.

As for your oil leak I would clean the area real good and take it for a run and check. A lot of vw oil coolers are loose and that can cause a big oil leak.

Oil cooler can be removed with engine installed but is a pain. Easier to pull engine and get a good look at it. Oil seals and oil cooler if needed can be bought at vw parts houses.

Hope it is just a loose nut or bad o rings.

Greg: Some folks when they install their oil coolers, be they standard or doghouse oil coolers, they  over-tighten the nuts that mount the cooler. When this happens the seals deform too much and start leaking. The problem gets compounded if the engine has a doghouse cooler because there are two sets of seals; the set between the oil cooler and adapter and the set between the adapter and the engine. The engine seal kits USUALLY have the seals for both types of oil coolers and can be purchased at any NAPA, Pepboys, Autozone etc. The last seal kit I purchased cost me 19.95 at NAPA.

    Hope this helps.

Just to give you an up date . After ordering new seals they are the wrong ones .As it turns out someone did a repair on the one that was taken out It beats me why some one would repair one when you can buy a new one for 80 bucks It takes alot to take one out.Should be up and running next week cant wait
