Hello to everyone. It?s been awhile since I have posted, but come to the forum to read new posts often. After I started driving my VW based TD this year I noticed my oil temperature had gone up over 20 degrees from the previous year. My first thought was that some rodent had built a nest in the fan shroud or under the cooling tin. After removing the shroud and finding no blockage I decided to change out the oil cooler (like chicken soup can?t hurt). After doing all that I found the culprit which was a torn left intake boot which was leaking and causing the left bank to run lean and hot. After replacing both boots it runs cooler than ever. I could only get oil temp up to about 205 on a hard long run on a hot 95 degree southern day and was hitting 230 before the boot change. I suspect it had been leaking some for awhile because I had seen 220/225 in the past. The odd thing was even with the leaking intake boot and drawing in air the engine was running as it always had. I wanted to post this to let people with a temperature problem to check the intake boots. Mine was leaking underneath and not visible at first glance.

Are you referring to the boots that connect the three sections of the intake manifold together? I was thinking about the cooling fan and the shroud and could not remember any boots nor could I   ; relate to how it would make the engine run lean when it finally hit me that you were talking about the intake manifold not the fan air intake. Must have had another senior moment Thanks for the info.

Sorry, I got a little button happy on my reply. Yes I am talking about the rubber intake manifold boots that run from the center intake manifold to the end castings that mount to the heads. Mine is a dual port, but im sure the single port set up is the same. I was amazed that it was what was causing the heat problem, but like i said in my previous post, the leak was causing # 3 and 4 cylinders to run lean and hot. Intake boots are an easy change out if you need to do them. Just undo the heat risers that run along the intake from the exaust. Then loosen the one nut that holds the intake in place ( just behind and to the right of distributor). Then take off the left side casting that attaches to the head. Be sure and put a new gasket on the head. This allows you to wiggle the intake enough to remove the old boots and install the new. It takes about two hours time. I wouldnt recommend the after market split boots, I think duct tape would work as well as them (only a temporary fix).

September 9, 2010 at 9:23 pm #242191I had same problem and ordered new boots, they are still in box, the 5mm vinyl tape has worked fine. Hope to change in the winter. Might even clean engine.
