old crap moment

Well i had one of those old crap moments today.When doing some new carpeting installation i mananged to put a small hole in my gas tank what is the best and easiest way to repaire a tiny hole

Really Bill?  Do you have that much confidence in this stuff?  I think I would be at least pricing a new tank.  (Don’t I remember that Greg had rust and crap in the tank problems when he first got the car?)

Well, if there is a rust issue, we sell this to fleets for their saddle tanks all the time.

if  greg  has a same build LR as my LR he has an aluminum gas tank. so maybe  corrosion  but  not  rust

Thanks for the info Bill.  I lost a car once in a huge gasoline fed fire.  No fun.  I’ll admit to being afraid of gasoline.

I once had to repair a small rust hole in steel gas tank. Here’s how I did it.:
empty the tank completely, remove, flush out with soapy water. Make sure tank does not smell like gas, because if there’s any fumes still inside then you could have a small explosion. Sand area around pinhole until shiny metal. Use plumber flux and tin the area with propane torch and plumbing solder. You should be able to close the hole with solder, use just enough heat toward the end to keep solder from being runny thin. If it wont close up, tin a penny and solder it over the hole. Test result with water in the tank. Blow tank dry before replacing. You may want to use Dry Gas (really an alcohol) to make sure there’s no water left.

Greg, you say you were installing carpet so I’m thinking you put a hole in your tank with a trim screw?

If so, just put a dab of Permatex gasket maker on a trim screw and screw it in the hole. Not too tight, please–leave a little room for the gasket material & let it cure overnight. Then never think about it again.

I used a form of the one bill suggested repair is done.I will put tank back in car tomorrow . I cut a piece of the old carpeting and placed it on tank shelf for cushion
