From NYT today, regarding Ben Bowlby’s hideously ugly “delta wing” race car, which weighs 1300 pounds and sports a 1600 CC engine in the rear: “The front tires, a mere four inches wide, look as if they belong on a vintage VW Beetle.”
November 14, 2012 at 11:54 am #252876Don’t exactly know why, but this car reminded me of a driving experience I once had. A friend allowed me to take his open wheeled Lotus 7 with the twin cam crossflow engine on a test ride along a super twisty road. I never did get to more than about 50 mph but it was the most exciting 5 miles I ever drove. I still lust after a Lotus 7……maybe in my next life. As I recall, it weighed just a bit over 1000#.

November 14, 2012 at 2:03 pm #252878Gee Paul, thanks I think. 😕
Twice in my life (without doing something incredibly stupid) have I climbed out of an automobile and literally shook with excitement for quite some time. Once was the above ride in the Lotus 7, the other was when I was allowed a 0-??mph (I was too frightened to look) trip down an airport runway in a Griffith. In the Griffith, I thought I was going to be airborne.November 14, 2012 at 3:34 pm #252879I’d say my “moments” are:
Four laps of Indianapolis in my TD, then riding along for four more in a friend’s Cobra, andEight laps of Walt Disney Speedway in the Richard Petty Driving ExperiencePaul Mossberg

November 14, 2012 at 4:14 pm #252880You should drive the “Tail of the Dragon” in Tennessee. Quite a breathtaking and exciting drive.

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackNovember 14, 2012 at 4:39 pm #252881I used to have a Lotus Esprit, from 1978 – 98, like the one in the James Bond movie, but I had it first – a real nice car.
Sorry, but as much as I like my TD, I would trade it for one of those Lotuses (or is it Loti?).November 14, 2012 at 5:31 pm #252882It is, indeed, “Loti.”
Indianapolis Speedway in the TD! That is too awesome. So where is the photo, for the calendar?
Loved that Richard Petty thing too. But the urge to try to pass that lead guy was pretty strong at 125mph….

"Drive Happy"November 14, 2012 at 10:34 pm #252884Ed,
Somewhere there are paper prints and negatives of the Indy event. No way I’ll find them in time for this year’s calendar.
That was the second year of the Specialty Constructed Vehicle Association. The SCVA was started by a couple ex Classic Roadsters Ltd employees. Great idea for a national kit car club.
They did two huge national shows, the first in Cincinnati, the second in Indianapolis. This was early 1990s. Maybe ’91 and ’92? The trusty MG made both trips from NJ.
The Indy show was held at Indy Raceway Park, the drag strip. But it included an afternoon at the Speedway. Great time!
