I have a 52 MG Brown fenders – cream body – which seems common.
Where can I buy some touch up paint that would match?
Any help on this small item would be apprecated.
July 22, 2009 at 10:07 pm #239325At an auto parts store.
Sorry, I couldn’t resist that. But seriously, I took a scrap piece of gel coated fiberglass from my car into an auto parts store and simply compared it to all the touch-up paints. I found a match.
If you don’t have something you can take in, start with some digital pictures. Find some paints that seem close and ask the store manager if you can take them into the parking lot to compare them to your car.
Park near the door. Heck, if the manager is any kinda car-guy/gal, he/she will want to go outside with you just to see the car.
The only other option I can think of would be for an auto-body shop to computer match your colors. They might do that. But they would have to mix up gallons so you won’t get your touch up bottle anyway.

July 28, 2009 at 9:26 am #239327Hi. Actually, it’s a reasonable question.
If you compare a buffed out gel coat finish to a painted finish, I think the painted finish will always look better. So it’s reasonable to think touch up paint will not blend well with a gel coat finish.
And there are alternatives. With my Duchess (bought kit in 1982) I received a gel coat repair kit. On my own, I bought a DupliColor touch up bottle that very closely matches my red gel coat and was easier to deal with for minor nicks in the finish. The repair kit color “paint” and the touch-up paint are not really the same. It might just be the consistency. But there mgiht have been more going on than that. I’m not sure.
Anyway, in practice, using the touch up paint has worked out fine.
For what it’s worth, one up-side to gel coat over paint is the gel coat color is typically thicker than a paint job. So it’s less likely a nick will cut through the entire color layer.
