Ed (and I) have been wearing pilots helmets for many years while driving our TDs.  Ed’s helmet is

http://shop.ragwingsandtailwheels.com/Old-Style-Sheepskin-Flying-Helmet-206.htm and is much nicer than my new one.  BUT, Ed’s is sheepskin lined, which is great if you live in the North.  (I can’t tolerate the extreme cold any longer.)  I have been looking for a good quality inexpensive helmet as a replacement for my old heavier (Ed-like) helmet for a few years.
I recently bought the following pilots helmet on eBay.  It is about 1/3 the cost of Ed’s but much cooler.  Very nice & supple for about $24 delivered.  Highly recommended for lower temperature top down cruising.   Maybe all the Carlisle attendees should get one as a statement of unanimity (kinda like our Hawaiian shirts)??  No, I do not have stock in the company that sells them.

    And in a related matter:

Finally got my Halcyons fitted to my prescription. This took some
doing, since the split lenses are proprietary & I could not get a
LensCrafter or similar to touch ’em.

Solution: Grabbed an old pair of glases–same prescription as I
wear now, more or less. And siliconed  them into the Halcyon lenses.

Started by putting on the old glasses and looking straight at a mirror with a couple little bits of masking tape stuck to my fingers. I put the tape on the glasses right where my pupils were. Then I put the goggles on and did the same.

After that I lined up the masking tape bits. I had to tilt the glasses lenses just a little to get everything lined up.

Then I remembered to take the tape off the front of the glasses lens, and put it on the inside, so I could take it off once the silicone set. Very proud of that.

Glued ’em in. Messy. Took a couple tries to get it so there wasn’t like a golfball-sized blob if bathroom caulk in the lenses.

    Ended up with this:

Ed (aka Rube) who did you get to model those glasses.   You overpaid him!

Excellent idea. Now when you wear the goggles, you can see where you’re going. I couldn’t help notice, you modeled them in front of a photo of an airborne MG.

Roy: that’s how I look when I’m happy. So I try to stay unhappy.

Bill: right! That photo is credited to “Jack Webster Collection” It was taken at Elkart Lake in 1952–probably the Kimberly Cup race on Sept 6.

I note from the available record that there was no #65 listed, but William Taylor was listed as the MG above #64.

The name on the number 68 MG, by the way, was listed as Briggs Cunningham, “owner or driver.”

I found it on ebay a couple years ago. It came up under a general search for mgtd. I might still have contact info for the seller; will check.

    Update: here ya go.
