Has anyone managed to fit a radiator inside of the radiator shell? If so, from what car?
January 14, 2013 at 6:46 pm #253861Do you mean up in the grille shell itself? My Fiberfab has the radiator mounted directly behind the shell. I suppose you could have a radiator shop custom build one to fit there, building the neck to make that fake cap functional, but I’ve never seen anyone go to the trouble. That would move the radiator so far from the engine as to require an electric fan. Then you have additional wiring, temp sensor, and switches to contend with.

"Drive Happy"January 14, 2013 at 8:25 pm #253862I’m still planning to use a 2.8 V6, so there won’t be much distance between the engine and the radiator shell. I measured 60 1/2 inches from shifter hole center to front edge of bonnet side panels. The engine is 56 1/2 from shifter to front of fan blade. 4 inches total is not much for radiator and shroud, that’s why I’m considering moving radiator into the rad shell. In the shell I think I’ll need a 16X20 radiator. Even behind the shell is only about 17″ wide inside.

January 14, 2013 at 9:08 pm #253864Cool. Thanks for the links. I also found a sprint car radiator that might fit:
http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Spike-Stand-Up-Mini-Micro-Sprint-Radiator,40627.htmlJanuary 14, 2013 at 9:26 pm #253865Mid 1990s Saab 2.3 liter rad is 14 x 20 or so. That would fit behind a TD rad shroud if you moved it back 5 inches or so, which would put it tight to your engine. The space in front of it (behind the rad slats( would fit your electric fan.
Finding something that would fit inside the original radiator space AND cool a 2.8 liter v6 might be a tall order. I’ll be keen to see what you end up doing.
January 14, 2013 at 10:01 pm #253866The old rule is a minimum core frontal area of one square inch per cu in plus 10% (in a properly shrouded setup). For 171 cu in engine that would be 188 square inches. 14X14 is about the minimum. That sprint car radiator I found is my best bet so far with 220 square inches at 16.13 width and 17 inch height. Inlet and outlet are only 1″ but engine is 1 1/4. Also the inlet and outlets are on the proper side for use with the 2.8 so hoses can be short. Close enough?
January 14, 2013 at 10:42 pm #253867Unfortunately the 15X19 Tracker and Suzuki (same vehicle) radiator is actually 19X15 at the core and outside width is 21 7/16. The forklift radiator core width says 23″??
January 14, 2013 at 10:49 pm #253868Sorry, I should have looked at those ads more closely.
As a last resort, there’s always an MG TD Radiator for “only” $400! Pretty pricey, but at least you know it will fit.
