I need a measurement of the rear susspention on a standard bug/beetle chassis.I need to know the width from backing plate to backing plate. As some of you may know I converted a super pan to a twin beam front. This all went well.I have the body on the pan and the rear wheels/tires extend past the fender line.I need to detirmine if I should change the swing arms, change spindles,or get different offset rims.I hope to add some photo’s soon. thanks
July 31, 2009 at 9:05 am #239357Are you looking for the measurement for a swing-arm? Or for an IRS? It may be the same. But I figured I’d double check what you are looking for.
Just a reminder oldbuzz….I don’t see you on the Registry list. Link is in my signature.

If you have a VW based TD, you should have either or both of the Robert Bentley publishers “Red Book” or “Blue Book”. They are the Old and New Testament Bibles of the VW Type 1.

August 4, 2009 at 3:50 pm #239360Been there done that.most measurments I have found give a track width, but do not specify where it is measured. With 10 vw based mg owners on here, and most likey on a standard pan,is it that hard to measure?I know I have dared to be different.I was informed I couldn’t use a super pan.Well I was able to convert one,and it worked out nicley.Unfortunatly I did’nt know at the time that a super is apparently wider than a standard.I will find a way around this even without a measurement.
August 4, 2009 at 9:18 pm #239361This is what I can find after a pretty lengthy web search:
Super Beetle Rear Track – 53.25 inches
Standard Type 1 Rear Track – 50.7 inches (this spec was for a 1960 Type 1 which means swing arm suspension).
The Independent Rear Suspension has a wider track, but I have not been able to find the factory spec.
Track is typically a measurement to the center line of the wheels.
I went under my car and tried to measure. But it’s pretty tough with a metal tape measure that doesn’t want to stay perfectly perpendicular. It was about 51 or 52 inches.

August 5, 2009 at 8:05 am #239362Paul; Thanks, that should help out alot, assuming yours is a standard.I was finding the measurment to be 53.1-53.2 for track on a standard. My thinking is that an inside measurement to the backing plates would prove more usefull. So now I have 2 options, different backspacing on the rear wheels to tuck the tire inside the fender line,or make the rear fenders wider.I also apologise for the rudness of my last post.
