Accepted as road worth by State Police in California in 1999. This is a fiberfab kit on 1969 VW Bug with rebuilt 1600 cc engine. Current mileage is 43,855 plus 2,222 miles on prior speedometer. Car finished by John York of York Sports Cars of Ashland, VA with single owner. The 1969 VW Bug had the major modification of introducing the independent rear suspension rather than the swing axle with a significant improvement in handling.
Three major modifications of original design to improve safety were: steel layer tack welder to entire bottom of bug belly pan to increase frame stiffness; roll bar with lap and chest seat belts installed; and aluminum honeycomb crush-up (from aerospace) used in front trunk to provide crash energy absorption up to head-on at 45 mph. This would allow using the car safely at highway speeds. (Note: many replica cars used only for ceremonial purpose only.) Original wiring (indoor) discarded and replaced by exterior wiring to limit electrical problems.
When tire pressure set at 14 psi in front and 28 psi in rear, tire wear is even on all four tires. Brake cylinders were switched front to back so that hard breaking will tend to have all four tires lock up at the same time. This avoids the front tires locking first which results in reduced braking and loss of steering control in extreme stopping situations.
Car has California SB100 number 2014298 which designates that no smog check is ever needed in California.
Car painted at 40,857 miles and kept under cover since. Stereo radio/CD installed at 42,330. Car driven at least every 2 weeks and less than 2,000 miles/yr.
At 86, I just don’t get around much anymore and would like someone else enjoy this jewel.
