I am currently bidding on a 53 TD. I have seen the car. It has not been polished in over a year and as such, the original fire engine red color has faded. The owner has been using rubbing compound to bring back some of the color, however it is still not close to what it should be.
Here is my question: does anyone know of what product can be used to bring back the color?
Also, some of the hinges are rusted or pitted. Can these be cleaned or are the replaceable?
Thanks to all who have assisted me with the insurance. I hope to be joining your ranks soon.June 5, 2007 at 8:39 am #237024Jack,
Assuming the car is gel-coated, Meguiars has a line of compounds, polishes and waxes for boats. Start here and click around their site for more info:

I know some folks that have had sucess with Gel Gloss, a product intended for fiberglass shower and tub surrounds. You can find it at any home goods stores, like Home Depot or Lowes.

Not sure why, but if you click the link above, the site will open within this “forum” frame. Better to right-click the link and select open in a new window.
If the hinges are not too badly pitted, you should be able to have them polished and rechromed.

June 5, 2007 at 1:39 pm #237026The hinges are not all that expensive from MG Magic. You will get a shock when you price chrome now,and old pot metal is the worst. You can also get them from a marine supply but MG Magic was a lot cheaper.
