Last week I purchased a TD that I was told is built on a 1969 VW chassis. It’s a Fiberfab kit.  I am the 3rd owner. The previous owner only had it about a year. The prior owner was an airline pilot / mechanic who owned it since 6/09. Being an airline mechanic his work was meticulous (anal). He went completely though the car and rebuilt everything. As an example, he didn’t like the idea of using a stock gas tank, so he had an aluminum tank fabricated, He documented everything he did along with the cost. The total on the list is $9,200. It has a new top, curtains, and interior. Air horns, gages, switches, clutch, pressure plate, shocks, rebuilt front end, brakes, distributor, weber carb, well you get the picture.

Still sorting through the info and enjoying driving although we’ve been having monsoons almost every day since I brought it home. looking forward to enjoying my new toy and learning about it here.

Congratulations, Tom. There’s much to learn and this is, indeed, the place to do it. Also a fun group. When you say “you get the picture,” I’m hoping you mean that literally — we love to eyeball each other’s rides. See you on down the road . . .

Tom, congrats.  Even though it seems that the prior owner did much to make your TDr very nice, I’m sure that you will have plenty to tinker with and make it your own.

Why not register for and come meet the gang at the Import and Kit Car Show in Carlisle, Pa (15-17 May).

There’s still time.  We’d all love to see it and meet you.  (Plus, you would likely get an Iron Butt award for the longest distance traveled, even if you tow it.  And these cars flat tow (with a VW tow bar) very nicely and easily.  Don’t go hog wild with fancy towing stuff.  I tow mine with a 2008 Mercury Mariner (2000# rating).  It disappears from view and it is very easy to forget it’s back there.  I’ve towed mine about 3500 miles so far.
