Accepted as road worth by State Police in California in 1999 as a Special Vehicle. This is a fiber fab kit built on a 1969 VW Bug with rebuilt 1600 cc engine. Current mileage is 43,855 plus 2,222 miles on prior speedometer. Car finished by John York of York Sports Cars of Ashland, VA.

Single owner at 760-533-5879 and richardcaputo@sbcglobal.net in Clovis, CA 93611 area.

Note: In 1969 VW bug had the major modification of introducing the independent rear suspension rather than the swing axle with a significant improvement in handling.

Four major modifications of original design were made to improve safety and road worthiness. They were:
    – steel layer welded to entire bottom of bug belly pan to increase frame stiffness
    – roll bar installed with lap and chest seat belts
    – aluminum honeycomb crush-up (from aerospace) used in front trunk to provide significant crash energy absorption
    – brake cylinders were switched front to back so that hard breaking will tend to have all four tires lock up at the same time. When tire pressure set at 14 psi in front and 28 psi in rear, tire wear is even on all four tires; and this also avoids the front tires locking first which results in reduced braking, and loss of steering control in extreme stopping situations.

These modifications and the independent rear suspension allow using the car safely at highway speeds and in curvy mountain roads. Note: many replica cars used only for ceremonial purpose.

Original wiring (indoor) discarded and replaced by exterior wiring to limit electrical problems.

A smog check is no longer needed in California since the car has a California SB100 number designation 2014298.

Car painted red recently at 40,857 miles and kept under cover since. Stereo radio/CD installed at 42,330. Car driven at least every 2 weeks and less than 2,000 miles/yr.

It was my dream car. The good looks of a MG-TD and the reliability of a bug. What could be better.

At 86, I just don’t get around much anymore and would like someone else enjoy this jewel.
