I was just looking at this “brand new chrome clamshell exhaust tip” on ebay:
and wondered if it is something that maybe someone who owned a TD bought in the 1960s for his full custom hot rod and never installed. Anyway, can’t imagine that it was really a TD accessory. Was it?Makes me think of Barbara Mandrell’s “I was country, when country wasn’t cool”. To each his own, but in my opinion it sure is ugly.September 20, 2013 at 10:36 am #257790Moss Motors sells one similar, as I recall, but I don’t think it has a reflector on it..
I agree that they’re ugly, but based on the length of the tailpipe they could serve the useful function of keeping the corrosive exhaust fumes off the rear bumper…Early FF TDr on 69 VW pan
Slowly coming back from the ashes...September 20, 2013 at 10:38 am #257791Sorry Roy – I guess I am not cool – I always kind of liked those on a hot rod – might look good if the pipes stick out straight – most VW’s don’t unless using the standard exhaust.
September 20, 2013 at 10:41 am #257792Must be the reflector that makes it worth $60.
September 20, 2013 at 10:44 am #257793I don’t believe this is an MG specific part.
Flared exhaust tips were big on American fifties customs. Like this:But I’ve never seen one with a reflector built into it.Paul Mossberg

September 20, 2013 at 10:45 am #257794Hey! I have one of those albeit WITHOUT the reflector. It came in a box with the kit. I think the one I have has an MG logo on it bit not sure. I’ll have to pull it out and check tonight when I get home.

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackSeptember 21, 2013 at 3:11 am #257797it looks like the head if the martian attack wings from “War of the Worlds” 1953. Or maybe the alien space ships from “Robinson Crusoe on Mars” 1964? Am I dating myself?

September 21, 2013 at 6:06 am #25779835 years ago, I was tuning the carbs on my MGTF and wanted to close the garage door since it was bitter cold outside. Thought it a good idea to use a vacuum cleaner hose so that I could run it and work inside, just like the real mechanics down at Checkered Flag Imports. Ended up buying my wife a new vacuum cleaner. Cheap hose ended up a molten mass. I guess this would be a useful deterrent.
A year later, same situation, brand new exhaust system, car up on ramps inside garage, thought I would roll it off the ramps without opening the garage door. This thing might have helped as I was not able to stop quite quickly enough to prevent an almost perfect circle from being cut in the bottom panel of my garage door by my new sharp exhaust pipe which was cut on a slight angle and I swear, sharpened. I think the garage door was made by the same people that made my old vacuum cleaner hose. I thought this was somewhat useful in that when I was working under my car, I could, without getting up, look out through my newly cut peep hole and see who was coming up the driveway. The hole stayed there until I sold the house 7 years later. I guess that maybe this thing might have blunted and distributed the force and only bent this already ugly device. No other garage damage for 35 years until this summer. When, guess what happened……..Oh, John, my 72nd birthday is in less than a week, so I feel your pain…………..really!Royal2013-09-21 06:25:41
